Watch Out for Potential Virus in Mods
MBAM found a virus among the mod files for my L4D2 game. The file name wasn't associated with any of the mods, so I really don't know which mod it was. Just saying you guys might want to watch out.

I guess the "community" isn't satisfied just booting players from games for no reason. Now they have to hide virii in their mods and maps, too. Lovely.

Just don't download anything off the net. There's a pretty good collection in the Steam Workshop, and since Valve is providing the downloads, they'll keep an eye out for such traps since as accountable.

There are no viruses in addons, maps - VPKs, Occasionally some software will make a file as fitting a profile but it is a false positive.

If you have a question, link to the download in question.

The only way that would happen is if you got a addon (from a 3rd party website) that was packed with .rar or .zip for eg and the site included smething inside the archive (.rar or .zip etc), if you get the addons from the workshop you can be certain they have no chance of that.

Also L4dmaps.com is safe, over the yrs ive used that site it has been atleast, it is when you goto dodgy unkowen sites you run the chance of ppl archiving (zip or .rar etc) with poop.

@ ChetF i think the OP got it from a 3rd party site not from the workshop

I don't download third party software for L4D2. At the time I didn't know how to find out which mod it was and Bitdefender killed it for me. If I see anything like this again, you can be sure that I will nail that sucker down. No, I don't think it was a false pos. I wiped out all of my mods and have tried being much more selective with the ones I install. It is, perhaps, possible that it came from downloading add-ons while joining a server through Steam, but I have never tried downloading anything from an outside source.

I've heard only a few accounts of viruses on Workshop/well-known sites, all have turned out to be false positives. Left 4 Dead 2 addons from trusted sites are almost all safe.

Do you know what virus it found, and the file name of the vpk? They should show up in the log files under the Logs tab in MBAM.

I really doubt it... probably just a false positive. Which mod was it?

Did you guys bother to read my last post? "At the time I didn't know how to find out which mod it was and my antivirus killed it for me." I well know how to find it now. If it happens again, I said I will let you all know what it is. As for "probably just a false pos" that's interesting, because it would be the ONLY false pos I've ever received from Bitdefender on a mod in my Steam add-ons if that were the case. I don't think it was a false pos, but I will let you know if it happens again, and I will let you know which add-on it is if so. Saying it was just a false positive over and over is wishful thinking. I'm only trying to give you peeps a heads up so that you'll be cautious, but hey, do as you like. It's no skin off my nose one way or the other.

Let me just add for the record that it was after I received this hit from my antivirus that I first started getting the warning from Steam about how add-ons are like other files from the Internet and can be harmful. But you go ahead and keep telling yourselves it was just a false pos.

Oh, and I run MBAM and Bitdefender. This was the only virus I ever found in my add-ons, and I've never received a false pos on anything like this from Steam before either. Anyway, think whatever you like. I originally posted this to be helpful.
