You want a cookie and a glass of milk?
You can either start offline with bots or you can join Coop games on Easy. You'll have to work together in any mode and you'll depend on your teammates and vice versa. Going alone is usually certain death, especially at higher difficulties. It's not impossible, but depending on your experience in First Person Shooters, it will take a considerable amount of time once you get there. So stick with your teammates and don't wander off, especially if you're not familiar with the map.
But wait... there's more: Mutations (modifications of the gameplay, suitable for single and multiplayer), Mods and custom maps with their own set of stories.
If you just want to play the campaigns on Normal, you'll probably be finished in no time (maybe in 12hrs, maybe a little more, maybe less). You gotta pay close attention, though, as the story is not told by the 'game' via cutscenes, but by the conversations of the characters.
Apart from that it all depends on you. I know many people who invested more than 1,000hrs and I'm halfway there and not even remotely bored. So, there is indeed at least a lot of potential, you'll just have to find out if it suits you.
PS: The game is on sale for ~5$ quite often. Do the math :)
Usually at least 3 times a year (during the annual Summer, Autumn & Winter Sale) - maybe once in between. So there's reason to believe it will go on sale sometime during the month of July.
Just avoid Versus if you really want to have fun.
