I got Saint's Row: The Third to run although it ran slow on default settings but when I lowered the settings, it ran normally (I read that SR3 runs slower on Win 8). L4D1 ran correctly on 8 w/o issues as did The Sims 3 (Both were installed on Windows 7).
Please note that the game campatibility issue is not exclusive to Windows. When OS X Lion was released, many OS X users who ran The Sims 3 on Lion reported that their games were not working which I read on The Sims 3 Forums. The 2 intergrated GeForce Graphics (GeForce 9400M and 320M) and the Intel HD Graphics 3000 were the ones affected. Also, OS X Lion no longer works with older Mac games that are PowerPC such as the Mac versions of The Sims and most The Sims 2 games.
I wonder if Valve titles other than Left 4 Dead run on Windows 8?
Remove everything in the addons folder and see if that gets it working.
L4D2 is compatible with Win8, but could be that some of the community addons aren't.
