Cannot run L4D2 after upgrading to Windows 8
I have a Gateway laptop that came with Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 and I upgraded to Windows 8 Pro as part of Microsoft's offer (Get a Win7 PC and get Windows 8 Pro for $15 until Jan 31, 2013). I installed L4D and L4D2 on Windows 7 (before I upgraded) and later upgraded to Windows 8 Pro and choose to retain my apps, files and settings. L4D1 will run in Windows 8 without problems but L4D2 crashes after the Valve logo and intro movie. I don't know how to get L4D2 to work in Windows 8, is there a workaround to get it to work on Windows 8? Should I reinstall the game?

yes, its the only way.
Sorry, not even compatility mode works. Its impossible to play on 8. Happened to my laptop. Lucky i got a good 7 desktop. You will need XP, Vista or 7 to play the game until Valve makes an 8 patch or something. Personally, Microsoft should be responsible, because 8 rendered tons of games unplayble. 43 of my games i own dont work.
Rules are simple.. Updrage, unnistall and re-install applications.

I had no choice. I like Windows and I will be willing to use any version of Windows (Even Windows 8). Plus, I wanted to try Windows 8. Windows is a cool OS and I like Windows 8 despite the UI and game compatibility problems.

I got Saint's Row: The Third to run although it ran slow on default settings but when I lowered the settings, it ran normally (I read that SR3 runs slower on Win 8). L4D1 ran correctly on 8 w/o issues as did The Sims 3 (Both were installed on Windows 7).

Please note that the game campatibility issue is not exclusive to Windows. When OS X Lion was released, many OS X users who ran The Sims 3 on Lion reported that their games were not working which I read on The Sims 3 Forums. The 2 intergrated GeForce Graphics (GeForce 9400M and 320M) and the Intel HD Graphics 3000 were the ones affected. Also, OS X Lion no longer works with older Mac games that are PowerPC such as the Mac versions of The Sims and most The Sims 2 games.

I wonder if Valve titles other than Left 4 Dead run on Windows 8?

verify integrity of game cache, that will fix it. It should be the first thing you do when a game doesn't works.
I got it to work on Windows 8. Here's what I did: I defraged the game files and verified integrity of game cache on my Windows 7 desktop, I backed up the files and put them on my 16 GB SDHC Card and installed L4D2 on my Laptop.
Have you added stuff to the addons folder?
Remove everything in the addons folder and see if that gets it working.

L4D2 is compatible with Win8, but could be that some of the community addons aren't.

I have 3 add-ons on my desktop plus the optional tools (Dedicated Server and Authoring Tools) but none on my laptop. My laptop has no add-ons and does not have the optional Authoring Tools and Dedicated Server installed.
