The best thing I could think of is to move all your workshop addons (steamapps/common/left 4 dead 2/left4dead2/addons/workshop) to the addon folder before (steamapps/common/left 4 dead 2/left4dead2/addons. Then unsubscribe to any workshop addons you have. This way, it doesnt auto deletes/ download and the addons still work. (It will show addons for your bro when he play too, but he can uncheck everything if he likes vanilla version). One drawback is that you have to check every now and then if the mods you have is updated (which is not likely unless it doesn't work after the next l4d2 patch).
Also hope they have a better way of fixing this in the future.
I just add the odd game from l4dmaps i have a folder in addons where i store anything im not using called disbled, so i will usually only have the one map at a time to avoid possible problems and they are there when i need them. As for the workshop I gave up on that a long time ago.
