Yes I know, those people are a bunch of b--ches. I had my fair share of encounters with them on the cracked servers I been on( actually only one since the cracked one is 2.1.2.5 now with the full version Legally bought I can play realism, Scavenge and versus with no restriction! Not only limited to single player!!!!) But that doesn't mean you won't encounter someone that is all about team-work.
If you want to find someone that is all about team work and isn't rude or being a complete b--tch, then you gotta "wave through all the d--cks first" Lol south park reference. But anyway to deal with special infected, You gotta have at least one person who isn't a complete azzhole and/or d-ck. Now even the most skilled fps players can't play l4d2 alone so with that one friend, you two can basically wave through the horde of special infected, by rushing to the saferoom, and letting the two other jerks die by tank, make sure you have a night stick, takes only 13 seconds to kill a tank, and probably 6.5 seconds with a friend that has a night stick.
Now if you are all alone then, RUSH RUSH LIKE F--K! For smokers, just press the melee(shove) button before the smoker's tongue fully grab you, cuz you can actually escape from the tongue and cause a 15 second cooldown, then RUN RUN LEIK F--K. Rush to the saferoom, Lock dem doors and as what Coach said. You gotta pray hard, and if that ain't working. Pray harder
I'll list what I do to handle each one. Also, the Jockey, the Smoker, and the Hunter can be disarmed from a teammate by simply shoving them off, or shoving the survivor if they get Smokered.
- Hunters: I dodge their jump range and then as they land, shove and kill or let a teammate dispose of it since it's dead already, assuming it gets near us. I also make sure I can hear them and make sure I can see them from a bit further away so I can get some shots off on it and either kill it or scare it into jumping for safety. If I feel I'll get pounced do the a bad situation I do my best to get to my teammates so they can quickly kill or shove it off me. Also, when they're crawling to jump it's easy to get a headshot in.
- Jockeys: I use the similar thing with Hunters, I bait their jump and shove when they land. They're squishy so just killing it as it's running up to you also works well. If I don't think I can dodge it, I again get near my team to help dispose of it or let someone else get jumped since I can rely on myself to save my teammate from a Jockey pounce. If you do get pounced tell your team to help if they don't notice, and try to look away from them since it'll be easier for them to hit the Jockey's exposed back. The worst thing about them is that they'll often just ninja spawn in a chaotic situation and ambush you without showing any tells, like their laughs or subtitles. Best to always be near one teammate at all times.
- Chargers: These often have a tell when they'll charge, I don't remember but I think they walk around in place for a bit and then charge at you, as if they were aiming their charge to get the best one off, obviously they scream when they do charge. In some situations it can be hard to dodge but you should always have enough room to dodge the main charge, if you feel you simply can't then try to position in a good place you'll get saved quickly, or not be carried far off from the survivors.
At times you guys may be crowded and a charger is guaranteed a survivor, what I do is get a bit of distance from my team and I so that if either one of us gets grabbed we won't all get knocked down and let the Charger get 1 or 2 attacks off on the person.
Chargers don't seem to charge up close a lot, it can happen but it's not entirely too common, they prefer getting some melee attacks off which can hurt a lot, often can be worse than a normal charge since it's a faster and safer damage output. They're perhaps one of the most deadly SIs but their AI is stupid as hell so it helps to learn their behaviors as best as you can.
- Smokers and Spitters: I put these 2 because they have some similar behavior, they'll spawn a bit further away and will try to look where the survivors are to get a good ambush or attack off. Not only do you get a good time to spot them and their particles, it also gives you a good time to hear their sounds and prepare for an attack.
--Spitters will often get more involved than the Smoker and get close to you to attack, sometimes they will do a safer snipe but it's not too common from what I've seen. Be careful during a horde where you're camping, always be sure to have a good spot to run to if a spitter shows up and rains on your camping spot since they can drain your HP fast.
--Smokers will often stay up in high areas like rooftops, they can jump down as a last resort but it's rarer and won't do much since it's exposed and they die easily. Their screams also make it obvious when they're nearing an attack or are close by. If you have a rifle or magnum, you can kill them quickly from their spot, if not then again, get near your team, or let someone else take the hit so you can be saved or save the person easily.
- Boomers: Ah these, unfortunately I don't have any better advice besides killing them from far before they get near you. Obviously shove them away from you if they get near you but this won't always work since a teammate can panic and just shoot it and get a few of you covered in bile. Learn to fight with the bile on screen, it's hard at first but you'll learn to notice the animations of the zombies and your team. Zombies do not cease to attack you if you throw bile on an area, they put priority on you. Hitting a zombie with bile though does get them off you but only until they die, use this to run or get a safe spot to deal with them.
- Tank: I think everyone deals with it differently, but here's me. If the area is empty then we spread a bit out to get into safer situation and just rain on him, the tank will often target one person so it's best if that person runs from it and just makes it waste its time. It can switch targets so always be ready. When we do this I always make sure to kill any zombies that may be in the area so the person running doesn't get slowed down by one of them and then get hit by the tank. In hallway spawns I really don't know, I often prefer running into a more open and safer area but if not possible then just unleash everything. If you have a melee you can get a few hits on it as it's roaring when it hits someone or climbing an object.
- Throwables and the Tank: Here's what I do, with Molotovs I make sure that it's going to hit the tank's path and make sure it won't hit someone or trap someone in with the fire and tank, be mindful when using them.
If there is a good amount of zombies I'll use my pipe bomb to lure them away and clear up the area, I want no infected to be running around and ruining a fight, kill the ones that don't die from the pipe bomb if you're not the one being chased.
The Boomer bile, ah what a great item.. not. The boomer bile I find useful in small situations, in the event that a tank spawns just as a horde spawns I throw the bile into a corner away from us and tha tank, I want no infected intefering with us and our movement. I'm not sure how much better it is to throw it on a tank and let the zombies attack it but I often don't like to use it since the strays can get to us regardless. DO NOT use bile if there's no zombies in the area, all you will do is spawn infected who will ruin your movement and let the tank get hits in.
If you can't rely on your team then try to have the best loadout to be the one responsible for the SI. If you want to run shotgun then carry a magnum at all times, or dual pistols if the campaign has none. Shotguns have poor range so you want to be able to snipe a smoker or far away SI before they can cause harm to your team, pistols and magnums help with this. The shotguns are great for killing chargers or hunters fast should they get near you and attack someone.
If you want rifles I recommend the AK or the desert rifle (the 3 burst one) or the hunting rifle (wooden one with 15 bullets). These I find are the most accurate and deliver some pain in short bursts, great for sniping SI from far away, remember that crouching and shooting in bursts help with accuracy. I often take a melee to be able to kill a charger fast or clear some room during hordes and crescendos. Axe and Katanas have the safest swings, both bats are acceptable but make sure you get the first two if you can instead.
I know my advice may not be the best but it's what has helped me with this game when I first started last christmas and has helped me save other teammates in campaigns. Sorry for the long text!
Damn man!! thanks for taking to effort to put that? ill keep that in mind!!!
AI Smokers: you have to kill them before they reel you in.
AI Hunters, strafe around them in a circle and don't stop circle strafing until it's dead or until you can rifle butt it, to death.
AI Jockey's: all you can do is back pedal while unloading bullets on them. (or... get someone else between you and it.)
AI Chargers: you just strafe to the left or right as they charge.
AI Tank homing rocks: you have to strafe full speed to the left or right, then change to the opposite direction as the rock flies. Can also shoot the rock out of the sky or get any object between you and the rock.
...don't get the witch angry.

If you want. We can run some practive stages in my server, with the special infected. We spawn stuff inside safe room (molotovs / pipe / etc), and then we go through each special infected just outside of the safe room.
Just add me if you want to do this practive.
