Any way to make install size smaller?
I hate to complain but SSD space is not free and 13GB for one game is too much. What is taking so much space and can it be reduced somehow?

If it's because of maps, textures and models, are there low res&low quality packs that could be used to replace the default content?

There are various mods but those have to be used in addition to the default game installation. If you have a big enough flash drive or a secondary hard drive, you can install it there.

The problem is because of the nature of the game, mods will not overwrite the game's files unless you replace the original files within the directory and directory VPK (pak_dir.vpk). Installing a mod the usual way wont replace the default files, in fact it just adds more files.

Any "fix" would mean negligible file size changes. You wont be able to cut down more than 1 GB and keep the game functioning the way it should be.

I hope itll make you feel a bit better if I tell you my l4d2 directory is 60 GB :P
(thats because I use a lot of custom assets for mapping)

Are the files using uncompressed formats for assets? If so, then turning on file system compression could help.

I wouldn't bother installing it on an external drive, even USB3 will be very slow, expect your performance to dive into the floor.
Just install it on your second or third HD you have installed in your computer, which you have, don't you? :boomer:

Do not use file compression on an ssd drive you will waer it out much quicker and your game play will be very slow with very poor FPS. Cause your making the drive work harder to decompress the files first before the game can use them so you will have a big performance drop. Also installing games on an external drive will also cause very poor gaming performance. If you got a desktop go get an internal SATA 2TB 64 MB cache hard drive and store your games on there. That is what i do infact i got 5 hard drives for extra storage.
