You've played for 200 hours and don't know the answer to this?

The "Green Flu" infected the world population rather fast. You should check out the comics
( www.l4d.com ) or the wiki.

I have a theory, based on what we can see at the game and the story of l4d2.

They are actually infected. The difference is that they are still alive (this explains why they die easily compared to the zombies from other games) but they are sick. This disease causes extremely angry behavior and some kinda of blood sickness that affect their organs, that's why they frequently vomit a black liquid (stomach damage) and sometimes they look like have nausea (brain damage).

The special infected can be explained by a virus mutation, like the H1N1 Flu, for example. The mutation happens by the location or by the infected human, or both. The first clue explain the existence of the charger and the second clue, well, for all the rest, but don't forget that both ways could explain those creatures.

Honestly, I don't know and I don't care, just wanna kill some zombies :tank:

And sorry if I had some english issue, not my native language.

They may seem anything but human, but they are human.
The green flu causes heavy mutations (e.g the witch's clawlike nails, the boomer's bloated exterior, the charger's steroid-filled left hand), and heavy psychosis.
The main example used for this might be that many of them can jump and climb, a feature rarely seen in hollywood zombie movies.
The left 4 dead community has also theorized the reasons of the Witch's crying being, she KNOWS she's a monster (zombies can't think or feel). She doesn't want to hurt anyone. When you flash a light at her or provoke her, that monster inside of her takes over. When she kills a survivor, she runs off screaming, holding her head and looking distressed. Wandering witches do the same thing; hold their heads and wander aimlessly.
tl;dr, The 'zombies' in left 4 dead are anything but.

The Green Flu seemingly came out of nowhere, one person got Infected, everyone else got Infected like a big Harlem Shake. Many people think it was an infected patient at Mercy Hospital, which is where the L4D Survivors go in No Mercy. The zombies are not zombies, they are infected humans. You can either be susceptible to it, which is what all the current Infected are, a carrier, or completely immune to the infection. The L4D and L4D2 Survivors happen to be carriers, they have the infection in their bodies, but it does not actually mutate them into a Common or Special Infected. The Special Infected come from Common Infected who had mutated as the infection progressed around the United States. So far it has only hit the northern Pennsylvania area (Left 4 Dead) and the Southern Alabama area (Left 4 Dead 2). The infection in L4D is two weeks after first infection, in L4D2 it is three weeks. The scarcity of Special Infected and the big pool of Common Infected is because of certain qualities people had maintained before they were infected (ex: Smoker may have been a very heavy smoker, Boomer a very obese person). You may have also noted why there aren't as many female survivors. It's because to get infected, your sex genes must be in a certain way where you cannot get Infected, for men, it's less specific, for women, it's a lot more complicated.

All in all, these "zombies" or "vampires" as Francis refers to them as are not zombies, they are humans. The Survivors really just are contributing to the extinction of the human race, but it's just in a self-defense manner, so really no one is to blame but the Green Flu itself.

BONUS: Animals do get affected by the Green Flu, but they don't turn into a rabies-like monstrosity, they just die like if it was a very deadly disease.

ANOTHER BONUS: The Green Flu may have just came from a mutated species of the rabies virus, this is referred to by Ellis in one of his Keith stories when he was camping and the MILITARY were testing nuclear BOMBS, which could've caused it.

The boomer is not a fat person, they became that way due to its mutation.
Its easily spoted by looking in the tin clothes he wears, some kind of stomach mutation makes it goes fat
