You can sub mobs to change your characters, weapons, textures, etc... You could even make and upload your own.
additionally, the game itself is simple and easy to play. Does not require for you to think to much making it a great way to spend time. Some maps may be repetitive, but you can still download campaigns from the workshop.
-nostalgia hits for sure. some players including me, are replayin the game for that nostalgic feeling (though honestly i dont feel as nostalgic anymore since ive been playing it pretty often with some of my friendlist for versus match lately).
-the replayability is impressive. sure, the game mostly tells you to go from point A to point B each chapter until the finale, but the ai director constantly throws unexpected events your way, even if youre playing the same campaign over & over.
-no grinding, no leveling up weapons or characters. but if youre into achievements, farming them can feel like a mandatory xD
-aside from coop and vs, you've got scavenge, survival, realism, and mutations. and inside mutations, you will find all kinds of minigame-like modes with lots of variety. you even can even install custom ones from the workshop.
-the characters are just lovable, whether theyre survivors or infected, it doesnt matter.
well these reasons been said a lot already, but imo theyre still valid.
A general example of how crazy the modification potential of this game is that I made a full-on Diablo/Borderlands/Destiny-styled ARPG Looter shooter inside of L4D2.
Few games offer a great amount of replayability, let alone have a supported and active modding community.
Seriously tho no game has managed to get some sort of replication going and the closest thing to it being back 4 blood had just turned into a mess of a project that couldnt really decide what to be while having unessasery levels of monitisation being involved
which may i remind people that if you got the full bundle of the game you got a week early access to the game (Which gives a head start in levling and perk building too)
the only project that came close screwed its self over and thats simply the main reason its a unique team based arcade like game and with the way comp and balance takes over everything something like this remains refreshing
if more arena shooter like games were to exist etc i dont think this game would be alive as well as it is but being the only old styled game still thriving and the insane intention to detail etc it only makes sense
TL:DR nothing has and this point never will replace it and its one of the few arcade like games still going
