How to add someone as a friend in-game?

With the recent Steam update/layout, I can't seem to add anyone in lobbies anymore. It just opens the steam overlay when you click on their name to open their profile. It shows me the Friends & Chat but nothing to do with the user. Sometimes searching the name takes a while when they have common names that thousands of others have. Does anyone know how to fix this so you can just see their profile? Thanks :)

do it the old fashioned way if that still works, which is your profile name > friends > recently played

this brings back those functions and the classic UI.
warning: it might prevent some other non-valve games to initialize ; but if you only play source games it shouldnt be any problem there.

if u want to go back to the default 2023 UI , just close steam again and remove the parameter , then open steam again.

So, I'm in the middle of a game and want to click on a players profile and I get nothing but a grayed out screen with a bunch of boxes at the bottom ... none of which tell me their profile info.
