I have an Xbox controller, but I primarily use my Steam Controller.
When I use my Xbox controller, and enable the Big Picture settings for the Xbox controller, I actually get less input lag because Xinput doesn't use the raw i/o registry like mouse and keyboard, while Steam Input does.
Get educated before you try spouting your misinformation.

Oh yeah, I did. I have it turned off by default - turned it on to try this. Steam Input for controllers is generally garbage.
As a rule of thumb, you want to be doing as little to the game externally as possible. That goes the same for graphics settings through the Control Panel (like VSync and AA) and other external applications. The game will generally handle its functions best by itself.
Just went back and forth for about an hour. The Steam Input controls are significantly laggier with an Elite Controller and the OEM XBOX dongle. The sensitivity and deadzones are both wrong when compared to the original XInput settings. It feels like sluggish ♥♥♥♥.
I would prove it if I had the NVidia input latency tool, but I don't, and this is the internet. You'll have take my word, just as I would have to take yours, as your claim is also purely anecdotal and without evidence. Sorry, bud.
Get educated.
Whoops! Looks like I (or the person who authored the video I'm sharing) did the work for you.
Here's your evidence. Relevant test starts at 6:38.

Left 4 Dead 2 uses "Native" support for all controllers via Steam Input, and you need it for the rumble support that the game added last month. These numbers are actually more like 4 (!!!!) frames of lag added, as I play at 120 Hz and each frame is delivered every ~8.3 Milliseconds.
