Which is better, Left 4 Dead 1 or 2?

I don't know which one is better. In your own opinion which was better, left 4 dead 1 or 2.

Get Left 4 Dead 2. All 5 campaigns plus DLC campaign from the first game were added to the second game for no cost, so to me there is almost no reason to buy the first game at all.

Left 4 Dead is a better game in many major ways, including animation, atmosphere, bot behavior, and characters.
Left 4 Dead 2 has more stuff. If you want an actual zombie apocalypse experience, go with Left 4 Dead. If you just want to kill zombies and mod everything in sight, go with Left 4 Dead 2.

They are different games with different designs, anyone who says Left 4 Dead is completely in Left 4 Dead 2 is lying to you.

I personally have to disagree. Atmosphere on the original maps is the same, characters are the same, while animations have some differences they are pretty minimal. You did bring up modding for L4D2, there are quite a few mods that give it a more L4D1 feel including how you view weapons, no melee and removing L4D2 SI.

It seems you are totally inexperienced in both left 4 dead, how the "director" of the game works is totally different in each game, even there are sudden changes in the maps and stuff.

Not at all. I just prefer L4D2 and don't mind any of the changes they made to the maps when they were ported over. Granted, I love L4D1, but if you're going to buy only one game, L4D2 seems like the better option.

And we've only been comparing the original maps, not mentioned the new maps, weapons etc in L4D2.

Atmosphere on the original maps is a lot darker. In L4D2 you hardly need your flashlight, in L4D you need it for many sections. Weapon animations, have you seen the wrist twisting on L4D2's hunting rifle? You have to mod that out if you don't want to see it on higher viewmodel settings as opposed to Left 4 Dead's which works right out of the box. L4D2 has no dual melee animations for the pistols, and no shotgun empty reload. And there's that hand posing error on the ported original survivors by default, that, again, you have to mod out against Left 4 Dead's general functionality.
And "retro" mods and mutations still can't excuse the missing or simply not used dialogue lines for the ported campaigns, nor the gauntlet crescendos that have been moved in. Try any of the godforsaken gauntlets in the ports without a melee weapon, and you will not be happy, even without Chargers.
