Yeah, except you'll have a ping of 5 and everybody else will have a ping of 300. :P

And God help the other 3 players if you decide you're done early. ;)

Can hosts be kicked? I don't think so, but if you get votekicked, everyone dies with you - the server goes down.

Umm....Doesn't the game finds for low ping servers? Everytime I host I play with dudes with 10-100 ping.

Problems with local hosts:
  • Often the hosts don't know ♥♥♥♥ about hosting and will attempt to host with all their crappy mods enabled, resulting in people experiencing the lovely endless loading screen instead of joining a game and playing, which is what they sought
  • Poor connection - frequently someone has slow internet and when someone else joins, they'll get 100+ ping. Your download settings affect the location of servers, not the ping; you'll have to use the mm_dedicated_force_servers max ping command to avoid these.
  • Nobody takes them seriously. Local hosts will leave in the middle of a game to go eat, masturbate to anime, etc, which means everyone else in the game basically just threw away the last 30-60 mins of their life.

Yes, they can, and the game goes down (return to lobby, with "server shutting down" reason)

Maybe, who knows, what is the computer spec and internet speed you have?
I can local host with no big deal, but its a lot better to host a dedicated server (not host) if you have enough internet speed.

No they can't be kicked as I have tried to kick the host and their name was never in the kick vote list.

Pretty sure they can using the same method to kick AI's.

Either way please don't encourage people to host local servers.

If you consider all 3 options ( Official, Best Available / 3rd party & Local ) that is more ways to play this game. So what is wrong with that ? Is there even much of a difference between 3rd party or Local Host ? Both have admins that handle the server in pretty much the same way.

Sure. Ping almost always sucks, you don't know what sort of mods they have, the hosts get used to playing at 0 ping and are completely worthless in every other scenario, the server's existence is tied to the host's game and so suffers from any trouble it experiences, etc. Most of the 3rd party servers are tied in to Steam groups, many of which have various established admins responsible for its maintenance and outlined modifications and customizations, not just some dude running L4D2 in his basement with MLP porn on the other monitor.

Really? Many play with me and some local even get 20ms, which is very good for a listen server figure.

Host does not always get the lag-free advantage.
Despite I being the host, I do have bad hitreg (just like playing on servers) and others have lag free hitreg.
