Your friend just needs to install Steam then add his non steam version of L4D2 to Steam. It will then become a Steam version and you can play.
If that's not an option, adding it as a non-Steam game will *not* allow him to play with those who have the Steam copy, since Steam just launches the executable and doesn't actually manage anything inside the non-Steam games (they can be programs or anything).
You can always get a non-Steam "legal" version yourself so you can play with him on a local network using Hamachi or something.
