Yea Ive been playing left 4 dead since I was 13. Im 26 now, Public modded lobbies are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ cancer. Cant play the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game without getting into a lewd 4 dead server where you can choose ur special infected so you have 4 hunters spamming at once or survivors with hacker weapons like missle launchers and laser guns. ♥♥♥♥ those servers and any braindead idiot that spends hours on them
Valve has a great recipe for replayable fun games... Like TF2, Counterstrike, L4D. Very simple formula to hop in and out of casually.
The modded servers are straight AIDS. Not to mention on those servers the survivors are constantly spamming the screaming voice quip..
Frankly I see modded servers as Gen Alpha entering the gaming world and being to stupid to play a simple team based game. They have to have fire works and flashing lights and MLG music and airhorn spam etc... Hm I wonder why people dont like playing modded servers
- Modded = Unbalanced with weird features (not all of them, but many people usually judge that way)
- Modded = You're the almighty god. Not all, but some hosts use their authority in unfair ways, like kicking simply because they don't like, spawning tank/ SI just to troll some players for fun, etc.
So in short, no, hosting a modded server is not a sin. It's just that people's mindsets about modded servers are more to negative than positive ones (thanks to the unfair & too highly modded servers out there). But most of the time, people want to play the original/ non-modded. So if you want to play with random people, just host a normal server.

Pretty much this. My friend runs public matches on his heavily modified games and wonders why people get mad. Stuff like Ai tanks that fake out rock throws like human players and common spawn cap increased to like 60 all on expert mode. Weapon rebalannce like the deagle having to 2 shot commons. Snipers are removed completely. And the list goes on.. It's fun but there's lots of randoms that get annoyed.
Atleast make sure its mostly vanilla so people can have fun.
Most of the time when someone joins they expect what the game is gonna be and what campaign they are joining into, So when i say keep it vanilla i mean by the knowledge of how the game works.
Ive played so many lobby's where its just Fire tanks with missiles and ♥♥♥♥ on Expert and the weapons feel like they do Less damage, The list goes on its not fun at all.
The way i do it is like this and its just a example, I like to host Tank rush lobby's on Campaign sometimes with sourcemod, Meaning that there's no other Infected besides tanks and Alot of tanks, The Survivors have to run to the saferoom or survive minutes on end at the finale to win, I also add it so player's can do actions faster, Like Heal/Pour gas Etc.
Pretty much small changes so that most of the knowledge is still there and while yes its chaotic, Who does not love some adrenaline every now and then. I don't add shooting rockets or anything like that... Just something simple, Even then people will still complain but this solves most of my problem, Just try and keep its simplicity. But that's just my opinion
- Chinese servers that use dozens of plugins and mods to turn the game into a completely different mess. Oftentimes these servers are literally unplayable due to the sheer quantity of mods being used, and if you don't know exactly what you need to do you'll just be stuck
- Lewd 4 Dead or deceptively modded servers. Servers that claim to be official vanilla ones but then use mods to disrupt the experience.
- Niche privately modded servers. Some guys local host server where the mods are set up specifically for his ideal way of playing, and often includes a lot of changes other people don't like.
- Power tripping torture chamber. The host installs mods that let them bully other players, treating them like playthings to kill repeatedly and prevent them from winning.
None of these are good. All of them are extremely common. Chances are most players will encounter a lot of these servers before they find one that just uses harmless mods.
But the negative experiences will stick with them. If they see your modded server, they'll assume its bad like all the other ones, so they leave to avoid wasting time.
It's kind of like if you were friends with a bunch of people who've all gotten food poisoning multiple times from eating seafood, and then you wonder why they don't want to try your homemade scallops.
