Why No Voice Chat In L4D2?
I know this seems to be an old issue, but my son & me have recently got into the L4D games. We completed the fisrt one & had great fun with the voice chat on, so naturally L4D2 was next on our list. I`ve spent all day trying to get the voice chat to work on L4D2. I`ve followed countless advice from here & the internet but nothing works. We`re both running Windows 10 & voice chat works in all our other games. L4D2 is supposed to be a co-op game, so if anyone can help I`d really appreciate it.
We`ve already gone through all the checks in the audio options & made sure our head/microphone sets are set as default in Windows. Start chat is turned on in lobby as well. Everything worked perfect in L4D, but nothing works here, it`s ruining our enjoyment of the game.

Did you look into your keyboard controls?

Yeah, I tried that, chat when key pressed, but still nothing. Verified all files on both PCs too. Nothing seems to work. Was wondering if there was a downloadable fix for this?

I know it's not a fix, but if he's in your friend list you can start an uninterrupted voice chat, I know it's a pain in the ass to hear all the time each other microphones, but I don't know of any solution :/

You can start a voice chat through Steam. Kinda like a Skype call.
There's a push-to-talk option if that's your thing too.

I find that the start voice chat option in the lobbies don't do crap normally, but in mid game it normally works fine. If you have a push to talk key assigned and steam can detect your microphone, just holding that button in game should have done it. See if steam actually detects your mic. Also, make sure that before you open l4d2, your mic is already plugged in.

I mean in the edit controls page there is the voicechat button. if that's assigned, is what I meant.

U can press C , but its very annoying . Use steam call function , go to ur you and your sons chat , click on the triangle and then phone call .

Try checking your microphone's driver. This issue happened to me a while back and I found out it was because my drivers were configured properly.

Ok, we sorted it. Started back from scratch. Deleted all L4D2 local files on both PCs. Made sure mic & headphones were set to default in Windows. Re-installed L4D2. Went into game options & made sure all mic options were all as we wanted them, e.g. mic on all the time, etc.
Then once all was satisfactory I set up a lobby, my son joined & we started the game. Had no voice chat in lobby (which we`d had in L4D), & voila, we could talk to each other in the game.
I don`t know if this will work for everyone, & I know re-installing it is a bit of a pain in the rear, but it worked for me.
We`ve now just finished the 1st part, & wow, it`s real intense. Fantastic, really gets the old adrenaline going.
Thanks to everyone for your tips & advice. I used them to go through my check list & they certainly helped in getting the game working.
Now my wife`s pee`d off coz she`s lost my son & me to another game for the foreseeable future!!

Thanks again for all the help, it`s most appreciated.

Ventrilo works as well. Team Speak & Ventrilo work WAY better than the in - game voice.

* sheesh * Please use push to talk. You may not know this. But open mic drowns out the other sound effects. INCLUDING the sounds special infected make. This negatively affects other players so please use push - to - talk.

I have had this exact problem before and there is a much easier way to fix it than a reinstall.

If you cannot use voice chat and you cannot hear anyone else voice chat, open the following directory:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Left 4 Dead 2\left4dead2\cfg

essentially what you are fixing is the following:

voice_enable "1" voice_forcemicrecord "1" voice_modenable "1" voice_scale "1.000000" voice_threshold "2000" voice_vox "0"

I would recommend pressing ctrl+f and typing voice into the search bar to quickly locate the config lines you need to change. Match your config lines to the ones I pasted above.

On top of this make sure your push to talk key is set and that whoever you are testing with doesnt also have the problem.

The source of the problem is hard to pinpoint, in my case it used to be caused by rebuilding the sound cache. I do not know all possible causes, so it is up to you to figure out what is causing it for you, should it reoccur.

Yeah, I will do if I`m playing with others, but when it`s just my son & me we just use open mic for simplicity. To be honest we can still hear all the sounds really clearly anyway, but I can see it would be a problem when playing online with others, if they can hear what`s going on in my background.
Cheers for the heads up about Ventrilo. We`ll give that a go I reckon.
