I know it's not a fix, but if he's in your friend list you can start an uninterrupted voice chat, I know it's a pain in the ass to hear all the time each other microphones, but I don't know of any solution :/
There's a push-to-talk option if that's your thing too.
Then once all was satisfactory I set up a lobby, my son joined & we started the game. Had no voice chat in lobby (which we`d had in L4D), & voila, we could talk to each other in the game.
I don`t know if this will work for everyone, & I know re-installing it is a bit of a pain in the rear, but it worked for me.
We`ve now just finished the 1st part, & wow, it`s real intense. Fantastic, really gets the old adrenaline going.
Thanks to everyone for your tips & advice. I used them to go through my check list & they certainly helped in getting the game working.
Now my wife`s pee`d off coz she`s lost my son & me to another game for the foreseeable future!!
Thanks again for all the help, it`s most appreciated.
Luv Swampy & Sam
If you cannot use voice chat and you cannot hear anyone else voice chat, open the following directory:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Left 4 Dead 2\left4dead2\cfg
essentially what you are fixing is the following:
I would recommend pressing ctrl+f and typing voice into the search bar to quickly locate the config lines you need to change. Match your config lines to the ones I pasted above.
On top of this make sure your push to talk key is set and that whoever you are testing with doesnt also have the problem.
The source of the problem is hard to pinpoint, in my case it used to be caused by rebuilding the sound cache. I do not know all possible causes, so it is up to you to figure out what is causing it for you, should it reoccur.
Yeah, I will do if I`m playing with others, but when it`s just my son & me we just use open mic for simplicity. To be honest we can still hear all the sounds really clearly anyway, but I can see it would be a problem when playing online with others, if they can hear what`s going on in my background.
Cheers for the heads up about Ventrilo. We`ll give that a go I reckon.
