Dead = no collision, meaning momentum can be kept up, and other survivors don't have to deal with them at all.
Stumbling/Shoved = knocks some infected down, masking them as dead and requiring aiming toward the ground instead of forward and through incoming zombies. Forces someone else to ultimately take care of them.
It took me a while to learn the right balance between shooting and shoving, aka I had to git gud at mouse aiming in CS 1.6 for a few years, first. I played this so much on console, probably my #4 or 5 most played on the 360... it was fine to be bad on a controller, old build, and questionable connection, but now there are few excuses to do something so improperly as not fire your weapon at zombies, relying on shove mechanics.
Perhaps if on Expert and/or Realism, I guess this strategy is potentially safer, in certain situations.
with the guy ahead (most likely hunting rifle) killing whatever its getting in the way with the guy in the back killing whatever is behind with the 2 in the middle killing anything dropping from the sides
its never as optimal as that and specials can change that however rushing through is never too hard its just that saferoom bit where they flood infront of you but 2 people meleeing through should do the trick
iv never found the map to be that dificult but that may be because i always just rush through and prevent the chance of a snowball
not to mention adrenaline or bile (from the first chapter) being saved is an easy counter to the horde
but yea because of the long narrow path with commons quickly coming from the sides its quite the annoying one to push if you dont move quickly
but something like coldstream can take the cake annoying straight line with never ending flood of commons
