do special infected target good players ?
i swear almost every match i play in pve mode, almost every special spesificly targets me, the smoker tries to grab me, jockey gets set on fire from other players, ignores the other players existence straight up runs at me and dies, it feels like special infected only targets players who are doing somewhat better than other players.

for example they dont even heal each other after getting downed, dont share healing items such as pills and andrenaline, and sometimes i literally have to tell them to use their defibilator kits to resurrect, or basic common information to use molotovs on tanks, i heal them with a health kit when they get downed, but when i get downed and start to bleed, they dont heal me, basically %85 of the time.

The director has a stress value of all the players. Higher stress values = less likely to be targeted by specials / commons. I'm not sure how the system actually works but engaging in the game will increase your stress value. Going down will max out stress values which is why you'll commonly see a horde die down after someone goes down (unless its a panic event). Its also why sometimes you'll see commons sprint right past you to another player even with no boomer bile out.

Despite this 'better' players tend to be targetted but I think this is cause they are often the lead player. Leaders are more likely to draw aggro no matter what because the infected will see them first. It could also be that despite having high stress value, your stress is still lower then other players.

I'm sure someone who understands how the director works can explain it better

There is a predictability to who the AI will send the zombies after next; it has to do with the AI's perception of your stress levels. It's doctored in a way to not let anyone get bored, but at the same time not to make it so hard for any one survivor that he or she would rage quit. If you are already chased by a (burning) witch, chances of you also being smoked or hunted drop dramatically. If you were the one saving your teammates from the last smoker, hunter, jockey and charger - congratulations, you're up next on the hit list. If, on the other hand, you just got attacked by three or four infected in a row, relax, that smoker is probably going after one of your teammates unless you just really happen to be a very easy prey.

Based on this I'd say good players who help their teammates out a lot get put on the top of the directors list of targets

its also important to note that the director rarely changes items in a map once loaded, if you do something to change how the director spawns stuff (like freecam on death, die a lot, take no damage, etc.), then it will apply on the next map not on the current map.

Pve means person vs environment, versus is pvp (player vs player)

Well, I have my own beliefs about this, like, they will target certain survivors more often. Afaik, Louis & Ellis are targeted more frequently (maybe because their screams are funny when captured by SI? :steamhappy: ). Other belief that I have is, SI bots will prefer targeting survivor players even when there are survivor bots nearby. In my case, I often saw a bot jockey kept running at me even when I hid behind a survivor bot as if this little guy had a deep grudge on me :steamsad: :steamhappy: .

I'm not sure about stress level & how to determine a stress level even on a survivor player, but probably this could also become the factor. As for them targeting good players, I don't believe that. I ever played with my friend, who was a newbie when I taught him about this game, & my friend got caught by SI more often than I did even when I was a better player.

Whoever made that explanation doesn't know what they're talking about, in fact the special infected are barely if anything covered by the A.I so they will go after whoever happens to be in their field of view, the director purely controls the common infected and will actively remove any that were ignored so they don't contribute to its 30 commons spawn pool limit, it's why there's hordes that can appear gigantic in size in one playthrough and horde that can appear to be nothing but a meer riot in another, the director will influence how many commons are spawned as roamers purely based on the status of the team, if they're doing ok then they will see more commons, if they're doing ass then they will see less commons. Of course then there's the what I like to call the "punishment" directive from the director because while many veterans of the game will preach from the hills that going faster in the game prevents more spawns, the director does the exact opposite of what they preach and should anyone think about ditching their team will find themselves getting exclusively targeted by the director for breaking the rules with increased spawn rates of commons and SI to boot.

pretty sure the game has adaptive difficulty. If you're speed running and not really getting in any danger, the difficulty gets a bit tougher. If you're struggling, it gets easier. Not sure, but I swear I've heard that in a detailed video covering the game.

It might seem like you're being targeted because the game is simply spawning more specials than normal because the difficulty is increasing. More specials = more times you're likely to get gripped by the specials.

The only thing being adaptive are the commons, the director has no direct control over whatever the SI do after they're spawned meaning it doesn't care who they go after.
