Left 4 Dead 2 can only be run in Vulkan

A few updates ago I could run L4D2 in DirectX and had no trouble with the game. Now I can't even run a game in DX9 or DX11 for some reason. I'm only left with Vulkan that stutters like hell and the game is unplayable for me right now. My CPU is Ryzen 9 5950X and my GPU is Radeon RX 7900 XTX. All my drivers are updated to the latest versions.

sorry no idea direct x is still working perfectly fine for me seen a few posts going on about the game not launching recently

does it stutter on l4d1 campaigns?

Yes it stutters on every map. Also when I get back to the main menu the game freezes. Also I get the engine error when I finish the chapter.

You have literally dozens of threads to help you troubleshoot the issue. No one is gonna come here with a new method, i can guarantee it.
Look up the already existing methods.

While you're at it, lose the -vulkan. This is a "quick mathz" suggestion that usually comes with other issues (stuttering, menu flickers, etc).

I can't even start the game without -vulkan. Other commands like -gl, -dx9 and -dx11 won't let me launch the game at all.

No problem man, glad I could help. You'll unfortunately experience some stutters while in-game and freezes in the menu.

-dx11 wont gonna work because game support only DirectX9 and DXVK (-Vulkan) and ToGL (Linux Only)

For me its looks like that some mods causing isuess are you try to disable all mods and check that problem still happening?

Also i recomend you to:
1-Verify game filles
2-Uninstall GPU drivers using AMD Cleanup Utility then install GPU drivers again

Are you running Nvidia drivers? I would highly recommend to stop upgrading your drivers if you are planning to play this game regularly of course. Nvidia really doesn't care for the preservation of old game and Vulkan is also a bad idea to play on the most updated drivers, random stutters and the fact that window borderless doesn't work, I wouldn't recommend it. I would recommend drivers from around November 2023. For me I use 537.58 4090 drivers, they've worked fine and will always work fine until valve update the game (which is never of course.)

So I would maybe downgrade your drivers and see if that works? It's just an idea but I would recommend doing it. -Vulkan btw opens up the VULKAN API renderer Chain, if it doesn't work you might be missing drivers that make the DX-VULCAN pipeline not work. Maybe search online for drivers from Microsoft about that. DXComplete should do all steam games normally redownload all DX drivers upon downloading a new game.

Sorry for the mouthful of paragraphs, but just giving a plethora of ideas for you to try. Hope it helps.

nvm but I guess a good thing is to maybe downgrade drivers I guess? I haven't tried AMD with the VULKAN pipeline so i have no idea really for it. Sorry I joined this discussion quite late and didn't read much into the earlier posts.

I wanna update you guys on the situation. Looks like when I updated my Radeon Adrenalin driver for some reason the older versions didn't get overwritten, so I had multiple versions of Adrenalin on my PC. I had to delete every single one of them and do a fresh install. That fixed the issue. Looks like they were in conflict when I tried to play L4D2. Other games had no issues. Thank you everyone for the help and advice.

Well that's good I guess, luckily you've fixed it. But I should tell you that if you are playing this or just in general any old game, I highly suggest not to update any of your drivers. Most drivers for your GPU hinder the performance of older games for some reason.
