but yes you should be careful with some older games as they can have vulnerabilities due to being abandond leaving them outdated
however its valve we are talking about then they got security covered even with older games
If you are paranoid about it just always create a lobby for an "Official Dedicated Server", as the in-progress matches do not tell you if they are official or not until you join.
to add onto this there has been workshop mods with malicious stuff in them, but I don't think they were able to actually activate. You can download GCFScape and open mods you download to see if there is anything suspicious if you wanna be extra careful. As long as you have a decent antivirus and scan regularly it shouldn't be an issue.
