Here's what worked for me.
Options
Video
Display Mode - Full Screen
Brightness - Increase it
You can adjust the brightness in full screen.
You might not be in full screen, and not realize it.
From there, navigate through 'left4dead' -> 'cfg' folder and open up 'video.txt' file, and add the following lines.
"setting.mat_tonemapping_occlusion_use_stencil" "1"
Save and exit, and right click on 'video.txt', click on 'property' to check 'read only' at the bottom.
