How to see what's causing crashes
I have not been able to play one full match for the past two weeks because my game keeps crashing to desktop. No warning, no pop-up, just immediate cold cut from gameplay to desktop. I have tried literally every single possible avenue to combat this, uninstalling my mods, uninstalling the game, verifying file integrities, restarting my computer checking my wifi, lowering in-game quality, adding scripts to the game properties, and all of it has solved ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. I even contacted steam support twice and they essentially told me I'm SOL. So unless they add a patch to fix whatever happened in their last update, I literally can't play this game anymore. Does anyone know any possible way to check the console or anything to see why my game keeps doing this? I feel like I'm the only one with this problem and every single method I tried has worked for everyone except me.

Crashing started popping up for me lately... and really bad performance at times when a horde comes.

I've played the game for years without issue. I feared that maybe my GPU was dying as it is getting old... but I'm not experiencing issues with other games... some of which are far more demanding than L4D2.

I uninstalled every mod I had, completely removed all files, installed a fresh copy. Its still slowing down and hard crashing.

GTX 770 (Like I said, old, but it runs THIS game great, or did)

I'll give it a shot. I shouldn't need to because I've always played at high settings with 0 issues. I wonder if some update to windows, Steam, or the game broke something...

It still could be my GPU dying... but again... not having trouble with any other games and I benchmarked it to stress test it. Seems to still be going strong... or as strong as a GTX 770 can in 2024.

EDIT: Not sure why you deleted your post... were you still getting crashes when you turned your graphics down?

I turned mine down and I played for a few hours with no trouble. No idea whats going on as my computer never had problems playing at high settings before.

Usually DMP files are created that contain all the error information if you open them with Visual Studio for example.

In my case, it crashed because the game ran out of memory. I saturated it with entities.
In my case they're .mdmp files and I open them with WinDbg, however I cannot decipher what it tells me when I open it

Same issue, I've been playing with the same mods and high settings for over a year with zero problems, but ever since an update to the game like a few weeks ago made it unplayable now. It's infuriating

I'm just glad its not my computer. Sucks to turn settings down, but game is still fun.
