In you SteamApps folder (e.g. ~/.local/share/Steam/SteamApps or ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps) in "common/Left 4 Dead 2/bin", rename (or copy) the existing libmiles.so to libMiles.so (note the capital M). This fixed the music in the main menu and in helm's deep for me.
The reason for this bug seems to be that on linux, most filesystems are case sensitive by default, and the game keeps looking for libMiles.so, but the file is named libmiles.so by default, so it doesn't find it and cannot use it to play mp3 files.
