When they finally release half-life 3, it'll set the groundwork for so many potential future releases. It honestly irks me that they wasted time making specialized versions of source 2 for dota 2 and alyx. They literally said source 2 was supposed to be more malleable, why not work on the base framework like for source?

Left 4 Dead was a “proof of concept” for the Source engine, to exercise its abilities and limits. It was used similarly in Source 2 engine, but there was never any intention of making a 3rd game.

In fact, there was never intention to make a second game. Everything you see in 2 was originally supposed to be patched into 1, but there were so many ideas being developed at once, it made more sense to create a new game. Having implemented their original ideas, and developed all the obvious new ones, and pushed the engine to its limits, there is nothing new to add to the L4D series.

Consider that Back 4 Blood was a test run for the appetite for the L4D series. Turns out, people don’t actually want a new game, they want more of the old.

I tried to do that myself with Right 2 Live, but oddly it didn't pick up as much as you'd think a near total conversion mod would. Especially considering how much went into that; a bunch of new campaigns, a bunch of map packs, new weapons, new game mechanics, a working achievement system, an overhauled menu that can be disabled at will, new music, and so on.

Honestly I can't help but wonder what the potential of this would have been had I had access to some source code like turtle rock did. Especially taking into account that with the exception of script help, I did everything on my own. Oh well.

Exactly. Correct. Same would happen with a L4D3. They set the groundwork in L4D and released it unfinished to see if it would sell. When it was a hit, they had the confidence and financial incentive to finish the ideas they had intended all along, which gave us L4D2. What would a 3 even look like?

Turns out people just want L4D2 with a few tweaks. Which mods have accommodated. Would people buy a L4D3? Probably. Would the masses ♥♥♥♥ on it because they had to force unnecessary changes to make it distinguishable from 2? Well, let’s circle back… 4 Blood, that is.
