Settings won't save?
Hi guys, so I start the game, change my video settings (resolution, details etc) and all is good but I have to do this every time I start the game, maybe very silly and stupid question but how do I save my settings to be permanent? It's so annoying having to do it every single time I start the game. I'm sure I used to be able too but I can't remember how 😅 Thank you

Thank you so much!

It didn't solve it sadly, I have tried deleting the autoconfig file, have disabled automatic look for lan connections, nothing helped 😕

I read about creating an auto exec file but I'm such a nuub on this, I'm not sure how to 'bind' video settings, like what to write, what to change... Etc
My see tings are as follow:
Brithness: all the way up
Aspect ratio: 16:9
Resolution: 1280 x 720
Full screen
Film grain: all the way down
Anti aliasing mode: none
Filtering mode: bilinear
Vertycal sync: disabled
Shader: low
Effect : low
Model/texture: low
Multicore rend. : disabled
Paged pool: high

Yes I have a very old crap PC 🤣
Hope someone can help me?

Go to

Program Files (x86) /Steam/steamapps/common/Left 4 Dead 2/left4dead2/cfg

folder then find the file named "video.txt"
right click it and click properties, you'll find attributes there in the bottom of the window uncheck the Read-only and click apply then start your game L4D2, that should fix your problem.

Try making "video.txt" in cfg folder read only.

that's the reason why l4d2 can't save the setting after changing it and restart the game.

Doesn't make sense because why it would be read only by default?

if the "video.txt" file was read-only, the game cannot edit the file even when you change the video settings in your game main menu the game still stick with the read-only "video.txt" file.

So unchecking it will allow the game to re-edit the file.

that's how the file works

I went through all the files on there, none are ticked. I have tried changing it to read only, go in game, change, leave, undoit, go back again... Nothing works 😑

Sorry guys, found it.
So after another look there's is actually another file there called
videodefault.txt and that is the only one which had the read-only. Option ticked! Must have missed it the first time I went through all of them. Anyway, went back in the game and it loaded my settings fine this time! Thanks everyone! 🙂🙂

But it wouldn't be read only if he already didn't make it read only. Files aren't just automatically read only...

I never touched any of these files until now when I finally resolved to start looking for a solution 😅 yep I have been editing my video settings every time I play for the last few months ahah
And the videodefault.txt was the only file with read only on, weirdly enough

I had the same issue but apparently for me the left4dead parent folder was fully on read-only lmao

there's a good chance that you fixed custom campaigns being all dark. And you set "video.txt" to read only. That's the problem, it can't save / edit it because it's read only, turn off read only for a moment, do your settings, quit the game after using the settings, turn on read only, and it should save.
