Most maps are build like a tunnel. Sometimes you can take a little alternative part of a route but mostly its a tube. You should get the hang of it pretty fast.
Maybe this helps you.

Just casually walking through the maps on a private server with the director disabled, you can learn the general layout of each map.
Or hop on easy/normal official servers and the group will usually take you with them; if not just follow them.
On a more helpful note, you'll eventually find it. If you don't, well that's on you. And that's part of the game. And they're not hard, they're pretty linear as the other replies have stated.
I am finishing all of the l4d1 custom campaigns atm, and not knowing the way and what happens next is exactly what I want. The official maps have become too linear for me and it's so fun to find where you're supposed to go. Sometimes frustating, but you can't have all of it your way.
