How to know where to go?
How do you people know where to go? I'm talking mostly about the campaign missions. Seems that there is a very large difficulty increase the moment you don't have someone on the team that happens to be extremely knowledgeable about where is the next 'checkpoint'.

Do I have to become a nerd and learn all the maps? Is there some sort of 'objective indicator' mod I could host?

I've been looking at mutations notably from Raymond's mod: "Follow the Liter" but that seems to only work in a team-based scavenge.

In short, I'm looking for something PvE with no opposing human team where its obvious to all team members what the objective is ("go there"). Any suggestions?

most valve maps and good custom maps guide you with light for instance.
Most maps are build like a tunnel. Sometimes you can take a little alternative part of a route but mostly its a tube. You should get the hang of it pretty fast.

Maybe this helps you.

Unlike other games like Fallout where you can go anywhere in any order you want, the official and most modded maps are very linear.

Just casually walking through the maps on a private server with the director disabled, you can learn the general layout of each map.

Or hop on easy/normal official servers and the group will usually take you with them; if not just follow them.

The official maps are all very linear. You can only go forward or back the way you came. The first thing I did was go through all the maps in singleplayer. There were more than a few times I got turned around, but I'm never left scratching my head for longer than a minute or so. Listening to the character's dialogue and knowing what the gang is doing on said map is important in knowing where you should logically be heading. They might say things as obvious as "down these stairs" or "through this door" when you get close enough, even. Aside from this, there are occasional. graffiti signs that lead you toward a safe room, and on low visibility maps like Hard Rain, the safe room tends to be lit by a light source.

lol literally that meme where the "player" needs to have an arrow in the middle of the screen that points to the correct path.

On a more helpful note, you'll eventually find it. If you don't, well that's on you. And that's part of the game. And they're not hard, they're pretty linear as the other replies have stated.

I am finishing all of the l4d1 custom campaigns atm, and not knowing the way and what happens next is exactly what I want. The official maps have become too linear for me and it's so fun to find where you're supposed to go. Sometimes frustating, but you can't have all of it your way.

Thank you that was all very helpful. Just had another run while paying more attention and it was really reliable: If there's no obvious light sources, there's graffiti and if there's no graffiti there's a character saying something.

Special infected spawn only in spots where you haven't been. Every time you get stuck in campaigns, look where the SI are coming from. I never noticed it until I downloaded the Extended Tips & Tricks addon.
