I'd recommend you to learn the basics in normal difficulty on any map in campaign, you can also watch video or guide for more specific tips and tricks.
don't listen to the gatekeepers that will come up and tell you not to play Versus, while i don't recommend you to jump in versus if you have never played campaign you should clearly give it a try if you want to at some point.
the game has many many mechanics and stuff to learn, it look simple at first but the skill ceilling is pretty high so if you have specific questions be not afraid and ask

Advanced, Expert and Survival are all coop modes, mainly due to how humiliatingly inadequate and destructful for the solo experience the friendly AI is. L4D1 feels better if you want those. Mutations and custom maps & servers are mostly useless community jokes.
Versus is for whoever wants it. Like with alll PvP games & modes, you can't expect a fully cooperative and friendly behaviour there, but if you are into competitive gaming, you already know it.
You can get into anything you want, but without experience harder stuff is not exactly the deal in a game with limited balance like that. I don't understand why I see total rookies in advanced and expert, they sometimes refuse to pick any throwables and pills, never use medical items despite being too long below 40 HP and die like chickens every 5 minutes...
With some mods you can feel better in any zone, esp. since vanilla l4d2 is more or less of a joke.
Lol, this too. :)
but for the love of god STOP SEARCHING EVERY SINGLE HOUSE/ROOM IN THE GAME.
And, try out new weapons! Sometimes your choice of which weapon is bad or good differs between player to player. Not too good at aiming? Try a type of shotgun! Wanting to wipe out hordes of zombies quick? Try out a SMG! Want to do lots of damage with a single shot? Try out a sniper rifle. Due to how many gun and weapon selections there are in LFD2 its hard to get bored. In fact, it took me years to figure out that the right weapon for me was an Automatic shotgun. (I'm not too good at aim and its faster than all other shotguns!)
