I was told to make sure that the files you are downloading are vpk and not exe or anything else. Should I use a VM to make sure that they are vpk first or should I have to worry about downloading malware at all?

gamemaps only use is to download mods for pirate l4d2 and porn mods

I guess I can only answer this with another question: why not simply use the workshop? safe, easier and fast to work with.
