They were in l4d1, assuming there wasn't a crescendo (they usually just glitch through that part).

Nah to just like mess around with not to do campaign, just to mess around and practice some tricks with some of the infected.

There is a mutation out there called Single Player Versus. It's versus mode with all bots. So after you beat a stage you switch teams.

As Mr. Gambling Man said... you can use the format

map (insert campaign code here) versus

but before doing so you must type the following in the console:

sb_all_bot_game 1

press enter then type

allow_all_bot_survivor_team 1

press enter

Then you are good to go!

On another note I believe OP wanted to say that he/she wanted to try being on the infected side by himself/herself just to try it out but mutation mods work the same way too

Download this mod (it activates automatically once you hit subscribe)

Once that's done follow these steps:
1. Choose the biohazard symbol
2. Move down to "Versus Training Mutations"
3. Select "Versus Coop"
4. Select your campaign and team
5. Have fun

The way this mode works is probably what you're looking for. You play on one team while the other is controlled by bots. Best part is, you can play this with up to 7 friends and turn it into a full versus game or just a 4 team vs bots versus game. When you play survivors, the infected are bots and vice versa. Be careful on custom maps as the survivor bots will sometimes get stuck or teleport through walls that are supposed to be events and skip the event entirely. Just press M to switch sides if they get stuck and then switch back.
