Force "friends only" players into local servers
People who set permissions to "friends only" should have to play on local servers. Seeing all the US West servers taken up by 2/4 players who kick you upon joining is utter garbage.

I run modded servers and My server prevents abuse like that. I agree tho.

People have a right to use Official Dedicated for their Friends - Only game. Nothing wrong with that.

What are you talking about? If it's a friends only game, you can't join unless you're on their friends list. They have every right to use public servers with friends only permission turned on. If you don't like it, you can host your own game or find a different server.

People CAN invade Friends - Only games through the server browser. I have witnessed it before back in a time when connecting to official dedicated worked properly & there were a LOT more people playing. Myself & some people on my friends list were in a game. Not a full one though. Then some random entitled person who was not on our friends list came into the game. They got REALLY angry when we kicked them.

How exactly do you know all the US West servers are taken up by 2/4 players? You monitorin'?

Do you know the difference between dedicated and local servers, and how could your suggestion affect the others' experience?

The server browser can & will show what mode of gameplay & how many people are in the current server. Easily monitored & can be easily done.

You can easily spot the differences if you know how to read the names of the servers. For example , Valve US West L4D 2 servers says something like this " Valve Left 4 Dead 2 US West ( srcds12345 ) " This may not be 100 % correct word for word & number for number. But you can easily tell which ones are the Official Dedicated.

I think Rusty perfers Official Dedicated. So he used the server browser to locate & connect to the one he wanted with the best ping / latency for him. Which by this itself I don't have a problem.

It's when he found a Official Dedicated & invaded a Frineds - Only game when he was NOT on any of the Steam friends list of the current people in that server is where the vote kick & problems happened. Which is still his own fault I.M.O. He thinks he is entitled to use ANY Official Dedicated server. Even when he is not invited. This CAN happen. & I have witnessed & experienced it as well.

Thanks... For answering for him.. I guess? Seriously, don't do that.

You didn't get my last two points anyway. It's not about the name difference. The OP is a weirdo.

Er... you do know that not everyone has a beast PC and an amazing internet connection, right? Forcing players to host their own servers when you have the ability to host servers for them is pretty much the worst thing you can do if you own a multiplayer game. If your internet is so bad that you have to use the server browser just to find a game you can actually reliably play in, you of all people should know why that's a terrible suggestion.

Join servers with 1 or 3 players, since most people just play with 1 friend. Or deal with a bit more lag and use the default browser. Or just find a different server instead of getting upset. It's really not a big deal. You had to sit through a 30-second loading screen, cry me a cold stream.
Not only server browser can accidently join a friend-only server of others. It happen to me when i used quick join , since then i did not use it anymore unless i am bored

You're acting as if I've just experienced this for the first time. This happens all the time. Sometimes it happens in rapid succession. It has happened with 3/4 people before, and even if I exclude any servers where everyone has joined at the same time, I still sometimes get instantly votekicked. There's just no way to tell which servers are which until I'm kicked for "muh private game." Maybe if the quick join function wasn't completely worthless, and allowed me to exclude third party servers that play annoying video ads that loop in the background, I would have no problems finding a decent server, and server browser wouldn't be necessary. Though it was unfair of me to take my frustrations out on people making the dedicated public servers private for their friends and only their friends, and for that I apologize.

What, are you really so sore that someone was able to make basic observations about how ignorant your questions were, that you had to get snippy with them and insult me when all they were trying to do was help? Low blow.

I very poorly expressed myself in my original post, as I agree with your statement. I think my issue is more directed at Valve for failing to implement safeguards that prevent people from joining their private game, or any sort of indication of games being private. It's not like I'm feeling entitled rage that a private game would DARE kick me out, but rather frustration over the fact that I was given access to a server that I would ultimately have to leave immediately anyway. As of now, the only way to tell if a server is safe to join is to look for players with uneven join times. This has also gotten me kicked.

Hmmmm . . . The only think I can suggest Rusty is to :

- DON'T use Quick Match. I personally hate it.
- start your own lobby. That way you can set a Public Game or Friends - Only game yourself , as well as the campaign & difficulty. That way people can freely join if it's a Public Game. & only people from your friends list can join if you set it to Frineds - Only game. Once the game has started though . . . then it might be a crapshoot. If a unwanted person joins your Friends - Only game , then vote kick them out.

Local servers, in general, are trash.

If you use the server browser, you run the risk of entering a friends-only game. If you don't want to run that risk, go through public games like most do.
Sikobae Jul 23, 2016 @ 11:25pm
OP you didnt count on one thing. L4D2 wasn't designed with the standard server browser in mind.

Lol nub.
