Difference in friendly fire damage of melee weapons
Why though? They all do the same amount of damage to common and special infected, and in that regard their variation seems limited in colloquial descriptors of speed and range (aka speed and rays).

The baseball bat does 7 FF damage but the machete does 5 FF damage (expert). Maybe I've watched too many LiveLeak videos but I feel like machetes should be doing more damage... or at least they should be doing even damage (the weapons do 5 or 7 damage, it varies).

Is friendly fire damage calculated separately? In Silent Hill: Otherside the custom stick with nails does 6 damage. Could be something decided individually, maybe.

I thought a melee friendly fire hit is 10 damage on Expert. Not the chainsaw , as it does damage differently.

Nope, some do 7 damage and some do 5.

Have you seen at least one video where they swing the machete as fast and smoothly as in the game? This is not supposed to be realistic.

Maybe it varies from where the hit comes from or where it lands.

never noticed to be honest, but i cant help thinking it might have to do with what type of dmg it is?
aka machette is slashing-dmg, crowbar is shredding-dmg, and bat is blond-dmg?

Mebbi dmg vs survivors is calculated by numbers of rays hitting??
aka 1 base-dmg + 1 dmg pr ray hitting?

- just a thougt..

seems weird they dont do same dmg

well spotted. honestly never wondered cus the dmg is so low that any melee is a good pick if your in doubt you can avoid ff

There is no "shredding" category afaik. Crowbar is in the slashing category (meaning it can cut smoker's tongue).

Doesn't work like that. one ray hitting marks you as "hit" and you will always get the same amount of damage regardless of the number of marks you got.

yea i know thats the case vs infected.. but who knows for sure how its calculated vs survivors?? we alrdy established it varies.

you sure theres no shredding?? crowbar is the only that should have it.. machettes/katana is slashing afaik.. but havnt updated anything in a long time so i could be terrible wrong

not really..

chainsaw..

I don't see how "shredding" damage type makes any difference. The only difference between bludgeoning and slashing is "able to cut smoker's tongue or not" + different animations for the gore.

As far as I know, crowbar has an unqiue headshot wound animation, it rips half of the face off and not the whole head. That's about it. I think it also has a quick shoveability after you do a melee attack, but I don't really remember since I don't use the weapon much.

It's just a cosmetic thing. Other than that, it's the same as slashing, since it cuts the tongue.

Cutting damage doesn't determine it, the sword does 7 FF damage and the machete does 5. Off the top of my head baseball bat is 7 and nightstick maybe is 5 (blunt damage).

Really? I've never noticed that, that's interesting.

K. so no diff in dmg-typ..

have you looked at crowbar?? not for the shredding, were past that theory, but for the low number of rays..

I know your a console wiz, so mebbi make a test where you position the swing so you sure only the last ray hit. could dertemine if it does 1 dmg only.

Again just random suggestions/thougts.

EDIT; what makes most sense to me tho, is that theyre just fixed numbers chosen by the devs for w/e reason they had that day. Makes it much easeir to scale em to difficulty lvl ,

This is an interesting read.

Crowbar is a meh melee. I much more prefer the bat, but have to switch it for the crowbar just to cut tongues if I don't have my uzi/smg/deagle. It's still slow and, while surrounded, you will be still missing a lot of hits, which is no bueno on expert. But it has a relatively alright range and the knockback. Rays are a problem I agree.

I'll later test the friendly fire myself, I don't think all weapons do 5 or 7, the value may vary, as I think. But it's just my assumption.

Cant this be datamined?
KoMiKoZa Jun 29, 2016 @ 10:06am
Pretty sure it's possible, but I don't wanna mine the data files, easier for me to hit my buddies on Realism Expert and test it. :D
bob Jun 29, 2016 @ 10:06am
I went ahead and decompiled Silent Hill and it looks like there's a damage variable for melee in its scripts which may determine the friendly fire damage dealt, I'll have to test it later.
