Cant start L4D2
Hey Guys,

when I click on "play" - a litte window opens, then it just abroats and the game does not open.
In my steam-game-list on the left side it stopts after it shows "scanning".
There is no black screen or anything else like this.
I can constantly restart it, there is no process running in background after clicking "play", this little window and "scanning".

1. I reinstalled the game (didnt help)
2. I checked the cache in the game options (didnt help)
3. Started the game as admin (didnt help)

Iam using Win10.

Have you any ideas about how to solve the problem?

Regards
Wolf

I am having the exact same problem, Windows 10 here. I verified the game files, I deleted the Addons folder also. I can get the game to load if I click the exe directly from the games folder but it runs in insecure mode and I can't join VAC servers which is no good.

Event Viewer shows:

Thanks for your reply. I actually read that thread before posting here and the FASTPROX.DLL didn't help me. I have addons installed but they never caused a problem before. I have removed the addons folder in the Left 4 Dead 2 directory. Would that be enough to elimate addons as a cause of the problem?
(/*◔ ◡ ◔*)/ Jun 16, 2016 @ 1:22pm
Not all addons cause that. Well, now, how is it ? Is it fixed ?
Thanks for your Help.

When I start the game out of the Stream L4D2 Folder - the game does work now.
But then I get an "-Insecure error". This error is caused by bypassing stream.

That means the start problem still remains.

This "-insecure error" happens for many reasons and among them : a useless addon. If ever you have pinned L4D2 to W10 launcher, remove it (or if you're using a L4D2 launcher). Then, Library > Right click on L4D2 > Properties > Create desktop shortcut.

Also, try to run Steam as administrator and run L4D2 directly from Steam.
Check if you have "-inscure" option set : Library > Right click on L4D2 > Properties > Set launch options, remove "-insecure".

If none of this works, try this : go to Library > Right click on L4D2 > Properties > Set launch options and add :

-applaunch 550 -novid

Well mine is not fixed and I tried the suggestions on here. Anyone can help me? Steam support said to verify the game files which I said on the 2nd line of my original post to them that I already done that.

1) Go to Steam settings. 2) Then go to "Downloads & Steam Cloud" tab. 3) Untick "Steam Cloud synchronisation". 4) Go to your Steam folder. 5) Look for "appcache" and rename it to whatever you want. 6) Restart Steam. 7) Untick "Steam Cloud synchronisation" tab again and the game will launch. 8) After the game launch you can tick it again (to enable SteamCloudSync). ~ You don't need to repeat that every time you launch the game.

Running Steam in Admin mode didn't help. @NotAPsycho, I tried that but it didn't help, the game won't start. AppCrashView error log:

I don't know much about that, but why is your game in x86 folder when you have a 64bit os? Or it's 32bit? Why is WOW64 enabled?
KoMiKoZa Jun 19, 2016 @ 4:29pm
It's kinda weird. The mostpart of files in the crashlog has 32 at the end, which means you're trying to run a 32bit version of the game, and that theoretically should be possible, because you have WOW64 enabled, but I wouldn't advise to do that on 64bit OS, since you have an opportunity to run the game in 64 bit mode.

I know you've already done it, but you need to re- install the game to everywhere else but not "program files x86" folder. First disable the synchronisation and uninstall the game, then you have to seek for remaining files in the registry and delete them all too, try entries like "l4d", " left4dead", "left 4 dead". And only after you delete those, you may install the game again.

I have a 64 bit OS (Windows 10). Steam installer installed there, I simply changed C: to H: because C: is my SSD. Steam should be in the x86 folder? Every other game works fine on Steam, just this. How do you know Left 4 Dead 2 is a 64bit game? I've been playing Left 4 Dead 2 for years without any problem and it's always been in the x86 folder...

Leave Steam alone, just reinstall the game to a different folder and tell me if that worked, don't forget about the deinstallation process.

L4D can be played in both 32/64. But if you have a x64 OS, and have an opportunity to play x64 version of the game, then why play x86?
I don't believe it matters much, unless you have more than 4GB RAM, but it might cause issues like this.
