i think where your getting it wrong is its not just the campaign its self, compare the l4d1 main theme compared to l4d2 and tell me what one gives the feeling of hopelessness?
the l4d1 theme feels way more hopeless personally speaking
the l4d1 main theme mainly just uses a piano and vocals with something like static in the background
where l4d2 has different instruments etc taking the lead for separate campaign backgrounds which really works against what makes the l4d1 theme hit hard
l4d1 theme has a bit of a bass and some extra sounds but thats about it the use of vocals over any real instrument or regardless of what the background or location it is just that 1 sad depressing empty soundtrack that plays
compare that to the multiple l4d2 main theme covers there's different instruments being used that adds more life into it and while the lack of vocals is fine it takes away the fact that there isn't really anyone or anything really around for music etc
that's not to say that the l4d2 aren't improvements are not done as well but rather the l4d1 just hits harder (at least for me)
at least music wise l4d1 takes the advantage of lacking instruments and using vocals to its fullest potential where l4d2 just tries to style on the l4d1 theme adding a bigger heavier base and a main leading instrument that fits its environment instead of going for something different
lets take dead air chapter 4 and dead center chapter 3
Dead center chapter 3 is an empty mall, something like shops are normally suppost to be filled with people and activity so when there is no one around in a place thats normally bussy something just feels off and it makes it creepy
Dead air chapter 4 is an airport, yet again another location that would normally be busy because planes are a common form of transport for people to get to diffrent locations in the world, maybe people are going on holiday or maybe wanting to live in a diffrent country for meany diffrent reasons is now empty and abandoned
or lets talk about something like dead air chapter 2 and death toll chapter 4
both have abandoned empty towns / streets that would normally be busy with people doing there own thing but instead its just quiet and empty so something feels wrong
When your telling people to remove all 3 bots and have zombies disabled your just creating a fear that can happen for any sort of reason that your comparison dosnt really make any real sense here
if you want to go so far even GMOD can be "creepy" for this exact same reason, its just quiet and empty even tho you are in a big city or something instead anyways
what your suggesting can be creepy for any sort of game even a game like Pokemon would feel creepy if the entire village was empty when you know people are supposed to be around
i went to the cinima recently and i showed up like 10m early so no one was around and despite the fact i knew i was just early so people werent around it felt off just being in a empty cinima room even tho i know people should be around
what your speaking off is more of a generalized effect rather than the map design being creepy
its fine as you can tell i kinda like to discuss things like this
iv allways favourd l4d1 over l4d2 for meany of reasons, i dont think l4d2 isnt creepy but for whatever reason it just dosnt hit the same as l4d1 maps for me
