If people hated Ro because she's a woman, why do they like Zoey?
I say this as someone who likes Ro more than most others: Rochelle is by far the most boring L4D2 survivor. It's not because she's actually boring, it's because compared to Nick, El, and Coach, she seems boring.
In my honest opinion, I only dislike Rochelle because she looks unfinished. She looks as if she was rushed out of the door. Each and every single playable character in the L4D has a very well-built personality that is developed over the course of the campaigns. They all have their ups and downs, their strengths and weaknesses, jokes to crack when the mood is grim and dark, all of them. Rochelle though? Rochelle is as bland as a tofu bar. She's... forgettable. Has no memorable lines, has no strong connections with ANY of the characters, and just feels like a random NPC they picked from the streets.
That's the way I feel. They should have worked a bit more on Rochelle imo.
