If Virgil was immune he'd probably be fighting with those other survivors. I guess there is a reason why he stays on the boat and even drives out to the open ocean to wait for the survivors to come back to him.

On the bridge the military confirms with the helicopter pilot if he is equipped to carriers, which can transmit infection even not developing the disease itself.
