Cold Stream is not canon, so play that whenever you want.
So it's technically part of the canon.
Cold Stream still isn't canon, though.
This is my understanding of the cronological order. The campaigns I marked with a * can be swapped in the sense of: You can play either "The Sacrifice" first and "Dead Center" after or play "Dead Center" first and "The Sacrifice" after since both campaign play out simultaniously.
And yes, according to the comic, "Blood Harvest" and "The Sacrifice" are tied together, while "The Passing" is used to be played between "Dead Center" (Since you get to Jimmy Gibs Jr.'s Car for the first time there) and "Dark Carnival" (Since you abandon the car there due to the road being blocked) since the car is still being used as transportation on "The Passing")
So yeah. with the origonal there isnt really a story at first but valve wanted to make one so they made crash course and with crash course and the left 4 dead 2 comic came a story for the game
