Low Lerp on Versus
Is it an exploit?
Is it cheating?
Is it game-breaking?

I play with 0 lerp for a longer time, and when I play against my friends, they whine about my lerp pretty often! They say that I'm exploiting the game, that I should play the game the way it's "meant to be played", that it's an advantage against 100 lerpers etc. etc...

But ... are they right?

You should use 0 lerp only on T1 servers otherwise youre using an advantage against other players yes

Cheating? Not exactly. Is it rude? Yeah it is. You’re diffcult to catch due to your high lerp, and you also have an advantage as a SI. Your attack and the lerp is different, so you’ll land some impossible 25 or a cheeky charge that’s not supposed to touch you in the first place.

Not really for any of those three. All lowering the lerp does is move the models closer to where they look that they should be to coincide with any actions taken. Its all still a manner of interpretation and timing. Anything done at 16.7 lerp can be done at 100 lerp the models just don't look right and the timing for what you see at 100 lerp came from trial and error and getting a feel for the interpolated data.

Really they should push an update making lerp an option in the settings and it should have been there since day one. This isn't 2008/09 anymore. In 2019 0.01% of people are using dial-up or garbage tier DSL so there is no need for the lag interpolation. No one should have to suffer the visual atrocity that is 100 lerp.

LERP in today's terms has less to do with dial up or DSL connections than it does with geographic location of players, wouldn't you say? Location differences are probably the main source of ping discrepancy these days.

to make lerp 0 you need to add ~3 comands config. If people know about "lerp" but can't spend 10 seconds to add 3 lines to config - that's their problems.

I agree, but they always cry that "They want to play L4D2 the way it's meant to be played" lol smh

How does adding a guaranteed 200ms of latency between two people help the issue of their natural distance base latency? Lerp was put in place to deal mostly with packetloss or an insufficient amount of bandwidth. That 100ms is basically a cushion between the client and server to still give "smooth" gameplay in the event of packet loss or if there is so little bandwidth that it is essentially also packetloss. That cushion gives the server time to try and deal with someones poor connection while still blending them into other people that don't suffer the same issues.

I use 16. Lots of people complain about it, they think my lerp gives me an advantage, i think i just aim better than them. Really lerp only affects deadstops.

If using a different lerp is cheating, then having a different ping is cheating aswell
You'll get different answers from different people. Changing your lerp to a lower setting does allow you to be closer to real time, which is why people consider it cheating.

Though, I don't consider it cheating. Because everyone in the game can change their lerp. It's impossible to know who's lerping and who isn't without it indictating so on a modded server.

Plus, higher or default lerp is really, really weird to play on. Because hitboxes are incorrect, what you're seeing is something that was there 0.100 miliseconds ago, combine this with ping and you'll start to notice a problem.

Now play single player and see how easy it is to dead-stop hunters and jockeys. Compared to multiplayer it's a joke.

It is an exploit. Anything that gains you an unintended advantage without actually breaking the rules is an exploit.

You don't need opinions for this. It is what it is. You may or may not get kicked for it, depending on the server.

You're assuming it's unintended though, so it is still opinionated. I mean the only objective stance is that the game as released is entirely intended so anything in it is intended (they did release it after all) but that's obviously not correct either.

If it was any kind of exploit/cheat it wouldn't be usable by console

Lerp has been made for player with high ping so they can still play and balance their game against "standard ping" player

anyone can use it if they know the command, I made a guide for that so anyone can bind it
