Why is my game so dark?

Note: brightness at max so I can still see, but this is what Steam screenshotted and in most rooms everything outside my flashlight circle is pitch black until they get very close.

1) Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Left 4 Dead 2\left4dead2\cfg
2) Right click -> create new text document
3) Open the .txt filel you just created and paste this:
mat_monitorgamma_tv_enabled 1
mat_monitorgamma 1.6
4) go to save as -> change the name to autoexec.cfg and change the save option from "text document" to "all files"
5) start l4d2
