l4d1 is more atomspheric but L4D2 gameplay is much better
Wrong.gif
Left 4 Dead 1 was the better game. The game's core mechanics and atmosphere was simply much more difficult than L4D2's ever was. It's due to It's difficulty that not only made the game a lot more fun but it was also, for It's time, an esport-certified game. After researching about L4D games myself back when I had only 200 hours, the biggest prominence of competitive L4D's history was actually L4D1 in 2009. Google search this on your own. I'll start you off with "Rotoblin".
Survivors were much more difficult to play and so was Infected, especially Infected . You have only 3 infected types that is now considered meh in L4D2: The Hunter, Smoker and Boomer. You actually had to work together, but It's a lot easier to solo in L4D2 in Versus.
Due to L4D1's success, Valve hurried and rushed off Left 4 Dead 2 with three more Infected and although they were great ideas, It no doubt made Infected much more easier to play and Survivor less intimidating to play as. The game's mechanics changed obviously and the way It was meant to be from a really difficult game to the point where It was just arcadey.
Do not get me wrong, L4D2's still an alright game, but L4D1 was more of a competitive game than L4D2 could ever be. L4D2's had It's moments here and there in the competitive scene but It slowly became a dead game because the difficulty was never the same anymore. It used to be from coordinate with the hunters you had, to "PULL SOMEBODY AND ILL CHARGE HIM OFF".
I hope this was a detailed answer for you and something to think about when differentiating between Left 4 Dead 1 and Left 4 Dead 2, despite how much they have in common when there's a lot of deeper things that should be taken of note.

Left 4 Dead 2 has more stuff, but in many cases it's quite sloppy. Such as the Left 4 Dead ports, those are pretty damn slipshod.
As far as quality, Left 4 Dead is better. As far as quantity and user customizability, Left 4 Dead 2 is better.
mods might provide an argument, but when it comes to the base game it will always be l4d>l4d2
L4D1 was better.
but if you have to pick between one of them. pick L4D2 simply because L4D2 has the L4D1 campaigns. also the workshop.
