"Lagging" but FPS and ping is fine
I've searched and searched for a fix on this and only stumbled upon one old post about it. I just started playing L4D2 again and I never had these issues before. My FPS and Ping are stable, around 200 FPS with 20-50 ping and every 1-2 minute or so, everything would freeze but I can still move. For example, when I'm shooting zombies running towards me, they would freeze in place, and then reappear closer to me. The same goes for people that I'm playing with, they would be right next to me and then one second later, 10-15 feet into the map already. This frustrates me so much.

What server are you playing on? If you're having problem playing on public games, its most probably caused by the person hosting a local server with a wooden pc. Its my primary suspect cause recently official servers have been problematic (again) so most people opt to host a local server while playing online. Try playing a single player game and see if the problem arises.

This may be a dumb question but how do I find out what server I'm playing on? I opened console and used openserverbrowser and nothing pops up for me. I will try the single player once I get home

If its a local server generally the host will show at 5 ping where all the clients have 100+

If your in the lobby you can look top left and see if its a local, official or best avalible server :)

It could be a laggy server aswell. Quite a few of those around :(

You should enable vertical sync to have more consistent (but lower) framerate if it's due to screen tearing and stuttering. But this game was developed in less than a year, so it's technically Valve's fault for rushing the development process and not fixing these bugs.

Update:

I tried playing by starting a lobby myself and changed the server type to local and it worked fine. People could join just fine and I didn't have any more problems freezing. Is there a way I can tell what servers I'm joining when I do a quick match? or is there a filter I can apply where I can only join local?

Here are my personal rules for knowing which server i'm playing in.

Official servers = players should have ping around 30-100+
Local servers = one player should have arounrd 5 ping, whereas the others will have higher pings like 70+ ish (unless if the host have really good net, then it'll differ)

Example in my case :

1) Joins random game, everyone having 60+ ping. No random freeze/lag spikes. = i'll just play on since high chances its official server.

2) Joins random game, one person having 5 ping, and other players having unstable pings (50+ jumping to 100+, whereas the 5 ping player's ping doesn't change) = highly suspected is hosting local server.

3) Joins random game, one person having 5 ping, other 3 players have 300+ ping = i'm out

Nevermind. Didn't see the rest of your post. So official servers is the most optimal?

Higly recommended to be official dedicated servers for official campaigns. Since its the best choice. Some people have trouble with loading to a dedicated server, but who knows you might get lucky (no problem for me). Local server is the 2nd best choice in my opinion, but only if you find a good host without lags, freezes or ping spikes. Personally i prefer best available dedicated the least, since there'll be tweaks to the game here and there and changes the gameplays.

TL;DR : Official campaigns = Official > local> best available
Add on campaigns = local servers

Edit : best way to know which server you're playing on? Just make a game on official dedicated and set it to public xD. For sure you'll know what server is it, since you started it :P

Okay, using your guidelines, I joined a quick match and checked everyone's pings. It was ranging from 30-90. I'm going to assume that it's an official server and I start freezing again. Is there a possibility where it's the servers causing the freeze?

Edit: and I just disconnected with a red caption top right counting down to 0 until I get kicked out

It might be, but i can't say for sure. I'm playing on a non gaming laptop and i don't have much trouble on official servers. Perhaps you can try creating a game on official servers to give it a try. Local server shouldn't have any problem since you're the host and its optimized for you. Official server is made to be optimized for players in the area of range. If you're not having problems after your official server test, i'd recommend you start up a lobby and make it public and play with others.

As for the red caption thing, i mainly get it when people are hosting local servers. Other times when i get it is when steam derps and crashes by itself, or when my own net hiccups :S
i can only think of 2 reasons why its happening:
1- u're having packet loss, you should contact ur ISP
2- the server is a listen server and the host is most likely using a maxwell(750ti + 900 series), or a pascal(10 series) graphics card and trying to run this game on a hard drive.

Hey!
If someone is still listening - I got a very similar problem. I'm playing L4D2 a lot and everything works fine, but since a few days my game starts laggin so that I can't move and everything moves in frames. My ping and my FPS is fine aswell. This happens definitly just on official servers and just after the first safe room. When I start a game on official it works until the loading screen from the first safe room is gone. Local and best available works perfect. I have no idea what happens :(

hey, have anyone found a fix for this problem yet, i happens to be one of the victims, i tried restar my wifi router, and checked the packet loss, the problem still isnt fixed
