Axiom Verge - this game is great - if love Metroid - GET THIS NOW. Best game on this list to my knowledge. You could literally put Samus and Metroids in it and you'd never know it isn't from the NES.
Others not 100% in the metroid-vania genre -
Rogue Legacy (play it again, and again, and again, and it just gets harder and harder)
Artifact Adventure (RPG like Dragon Warrior or Dragon Quest for NES)
RCRU (River City Random Underground) ... Not quite a platformer but great game none-the-less
Other platformers:
Gunmetal Arcadia and Gunmetal Arcadia Zero (Zero is proceedurally generated) might be worth a look. It was pretty solid but I stank at it. Zelda II fans from the 8-bit era Rejoice!
Environmental Station alpha may be worth a look.
A Robot Named Fight might be worth a look..
Cave story is definitely worth a look and is very good. A free version is out there (free, not stolen free, but free; the Steam version is higher res with better GFX). Good Metroidvania.
If you want a game kind of like Final Fantasy Mystic Quest on the SNES try Penny Arcade's Rainslick Precipice of Darness III (think that's spelled right). IV wasn't so hot though.
Oniken might be worth a look, but I haven't played it long enough to tell well if it is.
External visions might be worth a look, check reviews and try it out or watch videos on it.
I've heard only good things about Castle in The Darkness mentioned above.
Want GTA on nes? Retro City Rampage! Top-down view 2d GTA & it's 8 bit charm maxed out - worth a play!
AM2R is a free fan-remake in pseudo-16-bit, and based on the original gameboy Metroid II, do check it out if you can find it, though it's not on Steam. It's very well made, too. If you like Axiom Verge and Metroid you must check this one out.
explodingrabbit (dot com) has a mario 2d fan remake that runs right from the browser. With many of the popular 8-bit characters in it - yes you can play Mario on stock or custom 8-bit levels, even Simon Belmont, Megaman, Link, and Samus Aran (and much more). With custom graphics, it's a real gem. Safe for work, though I wouldn't let the boss catch you playing when not on lunch hour.
--Good luck, and when I say 'worth a look', judge the game by video play-throughs or reviews and see if it catches your interest.
They're my 2 most favorite modern 2D side scroller.
AGVN games: Don't have either; don't like the AVGN so never really looked into them.
Axiom Verge: Love it
Rogue Legacy: Love it but my computer can't handle a lot of the traits involving screen effects.
Artifact Adventure: Don't have it but have looked into it. Reviews seemed mixed
RCRU: Not really interested in it.
Gunmetal Arcadia: Have it, mixed opinions after having runs constantly end from going into rooms and being sandwitched between two enemies in a corridor, unable to block projectiles. Really liked the game otherwise but that's absolutely horrible design, even for a roguelike.
Gunmetal Arcadia Zero: Haven't played it. If it's better than the other one I might give it a shot though.
Environmental Station Alpha: Literally one of the best games I've ever played.
A Robot Named Fight: Never heard of it, I'll check it out.
Cave Story: Have played it many times on many platorms. A classic.
Penny Arcade's Rainslick Precipice of Darness III: Have a couple other games in the series but not this one. If it is more action orientated than RPG I might give it a shot.
Oniken: On my wishlist
External Visions: Never heard of it. Might as well download it given it is apparently free now.
Castle in the Darkness: Probably the most underrated game on Steam. Wonderful game.
Retro City Rampage: Liked it but got very repetitive quickly.
AM2R: Have had it downloaded for a while but haven't played it yet.
explodingrabbit Super Mario Bros: Great game -- had no idea they added more characters! Gonna have to revisit it.
Momodora: Reverie Under The Moonlight: Another fantastic game.
Pretty surprised no one mentioned La-Mulana 1 and 2
I agree, and I may add Cat Maze, Xeodrifter, and Luna Lights along
(I forget the name Touhou in game)

Pharao Rebirth is good adventurer plataformer either, not mention Hollow Knight as wonderful metroidvania!
I recommend Monster Boy too
