Fire, Ice, Lightning, Poison: Four Elemental Reactions Explained

Oct 28

Hi everyone! This time, let's talk about combining elements in Unique Sword.

Once you've added fire, ice, lightning or poison to a sword, there's more to watch than the damage numbers. What happens when an ice hit lands on an enemy that's already burning? Or when lightning hits something frozen?

That's where elemental reactions come in. We've separated the four reactions below, with one gameplay GIF for each so you can see what's happening without a whole battle getting in the way.

Fire + Ice | Steam Burst catches the neighbors too

Hit a burning enemy with ice, or a frozen enemy with fire, to trigger Steam Burst.

Try setting one monster alight, then following up with an ice sword. The burst hits enemies around the target as well, which makes a tightly packed group a good place to try it.

Steam Burst also puts out the target's burn. If you want to keep it burning, a later attack will need to set it alight again.

Ice + Lightning | Freeze it, then Shatter it

Lightning hitting a frozen enemy triggers Shatter, dealing extra damage and ending the freeze. The order matters here: ice first, lightning second. Freeze the enemy, then let a lightning sword break the ice. Lightning followed by ice won't trigger Shatter.

Do you want to keep that monster frozen a little longer, or cash in the freeze for another burst of damage? It's something to think about when choosing which swords to field together.

Poison + Lightning | Paralysis buys a little time

Lightning hitting a poisoned enemy, or poison hitting a shocked enemy, deals extra damage and can briefly stun it.Poison slows the enemy down. Follow it with lightning, and you can briefly stop it from moving or attacking. When a monster is getting close to your turrets, that little pause can be useful.

Enemies have a short period of stun immunity after a stun ends, and there's a limit to how much crowd control they can take. Leave room for those gaps when planning your build.

Fire + Poison | Toxic Blaze passes the fire along

Fire hitting a poisoned enemy, or poison hitting a burning enemy, triggers Toxic Blaze. It deals extra damage, and if the target is still burning at that moment, it can spread that burn to up to four other nearby enemies. With monsters close together, you can see the fire pass from one to its neighbors.

To try it, start with an attack that applies Burn, then follow up with a poison sword. It's the target's existing burn that gets passed along, so keep an eye on whether the fire is still going.

Back to the workshop: give two elements a try

After completing Chapter 1, you can start experimenting with these combinations. Different swords can set each other up, or you can put two elements on one sword and trigger reactions with later hits.
The key is that the target must already have the right status before the triggering hit lands. Adding two elements doesn't mean the very first hit will cause a reaction. Each reaction also has its own base cooldown on each target.

Developer Diary | Four Monsters to Meet Before Your Next Expedition

Oct 25

Swordsmiths, let's step out of the forge and onto the battlefield. Today, we're introducing four monsters you'll encounter on your journey.

Damage, elements, and Intent paths all have a part to play when you build a sword. When different enemies arrive in the same wave, can your creations handle what each one brings to the fight?

Frost Beetle | An Armored Advance

A tough shell that reduces physical damage.

The Frost Beetle moves slowly, but its high health and protective shell let it withstand repeated hits. Your flying swords may keep landing, yet it can still inch closer to your turrets.

Try adding elemental damage to your build. A few changes back at the forge could give the same sword a new way through this stubborn foe.

Frostthorn Spitter | Danger at a Distance

Your turret can be in danger long before this monster reaches it.The Frostthorn Spitter launches ice spikes at your turrets from range. While other monsters advance, it can already be attacking from behind them.

This is a good reason to revisit your Intent paths. Do they circle the front line, or reach far enough to catch enemies farther back?

Bell Shaman | A Fight That Won't Stay Won

While the shaman lives, wounded allies can recover. The Bell Shaman periodically heals nearby injured monsters. Health you worked hard to whittle away can return with its next spell.

When a shaman appears alongside durable enemies, a drawn-out fight becomes harder to finish. Plan attack coverage that can reach it, instead of letting the most obvious target take all your attention.

Splitting Slime | One Defeat, Two New Problems

Defeat one slime, and two smaller ones take its place. When defeated, a Splitting Slime breaks into two smaller slimes that continue advancing.

One target becomes two. Your firing rate, the number of hits each sword can make, and the area covered by your Intent paths all help determine how well you can deal with the survivors.

Let Your Next Opponent Inspire Your Next Sword

Armor at the front, ice spikes from the rear, a shaman healing its allies, and slimes that split when defeated: together, these enemies give a single lineup several problems to solve.
Will you forge an elemental sword to deal with tough shells, or draw an Intent path that sweeps through a whole group?

Unique Sword is planned for November 6 — Build your own flying swords

Oct 23

Swordsmiths, ready to see your creations take flight?

Unique Sword is planned to launch on Steam on November 6, 2026!

A single-player, pixel-art strategy tower defense game where you build the weapons that fight for you. Start with a blade, fit your chosen parts, draw its Sword Intent, and take your lineup into battle. Every sword you create can have its own look and fighting style.

Build a sword that fights your way

Rotate, position and layer parts within your blade's installation area and capacity. Focus on fire rate, critical hits or piercing, or build around elements and set bonuses. The same blade can become something very different with a new combination of parts.

Feeling adventurous? A rubber chicken, salted fish, baguette or leek can be the star of your lineup, too.

Draw your attacks with Sword Intent

Use freehand strokes, straight lines and curves to design each sword's Sword Intent. On a hit, it has a chance to summon a phantom that flies along the path you drew. A winding dragon, an interlocking star, even a smiley face: turn your ideas into attacks within your sword's Qi and stroke limits.

Mix elements, sets and sword skills

Burn enemies with fire, freeze them in place, then turn the tide with chain lightning and slowing poison. Once deployed, your turrets fire flying swords automatically. Cast sword skills at crucial moments to face monster waves and bosses, and watch your choice of parts come to life on the battlefield.

Bring your swords together in a Sword Formation

When enough qualifying swords trigger their Sword Intent within the required time window, your equipped Sword Formation activates. Progress further to unlock Custom Formations: combine materials, a Formation Eye and Formation Flags, design a flight path, and choose preset artwork or import your own icon and activation background.

Forge your own path, town by town

Prepare in distinctive towns, take on quests, craft and refine gear, and follow the campaign to uncover the sword case's secret. As your journey progresses, unlock the Tower of Trials, the Sword Tomb and Endless Mode to put your favorite builds to the test.

Get ready to take flight on November 6
