So yeah, let us try to play without remapping. Not working: it is totally frustrating when trying to figure out what button to press because your onscreeen helps uses PlayStation buttons. Besides that, the messy controls (the buttons that actually do work) make no sense, like I need to press the Game Menu button in order to shoot (and really thats pretty awkward). That's like having to press the Share Button on a Playstation Controller to shoot/interact.
It is unplayable with a Xbox Controller right now.
Part of me laughs a little, though, because I honestly hate the xbox controller. I hate it's design, I hate it's feel, I hate it's buttons. I've been a PS controller guy since the original PSX. One of my biggest complaints about using my controller on my PC is that many games do exactly what's happening to you, but vice-versa. It always annoyed the holy high hell out of me to see xbox buttons when I'm using a PS controller. So, I apologize, but I find humor in the fact that I'm hearing an xbox user complain about the same things. XD
Either way, stuff should work out of the box, especially considering it is CrossPlatform .
I completely agree that it should work out of the box, but more often than not games tend not to.
I still recommend turning the support on, even if it's just for this game. It may work, it may not work, but the only way to know is to try it. The reason I recommend trying it is because I tried the demo of Tales of Beseria, and initially my controller was all bjorked just like you're describing in this game. I turned on PS4 support, and the controls worked perfectly. Unfortunately they used *gag* xbox symbols, but it worked.
I understand not wanting to screw up your other games, Injustice 2 works 100% perfectly with my PS4 controller, complete with PS symbols in-game. So, after playing the demo, I just turned the support back off so I wouldn't mess with my other games.
It still may not work, I bought Giana Sisters 2D the other day since it was on sale, and the buttons were all screwed up. X360ce didn't help, so I tried turning on PS4 support. It.......sorta worked. It remapped the buttons how they were supposed to be, but it forgot to erase what the buttons used to be. For example, right went right, but up also went right rather than looking up. Pressing A(X) jumped, but it also shot fireballs. Technically, X(square) was supposed to be that button.
I give up. I am upset I backed this game on kickstarter.
Back to Dark Souls 3 it is! ;)
Controllers:
XBox Wireless, used daily.
Microsoft Sidewinder 2 Force feedback joystick.
Issues experienced.
* No response when pressing Start on Xbox controller.
* Menu options highlights and scrolls through, I identified as my joystick. To stop this I have to unplug joystick from USB. You don't wanna see my USB cables, a wild guess.
* On screen icons for Controllers display and X and solid 0 like a dartboard "bullseye".
* None of the buttons on my controllers respond. For example red B on Xbox controller, nothing happens when pressed. In all my games this is 'back/previous".
* In game charachter moves towards the whatever the joystick is leaning towards. this character is uncontrolable. A workaround would be to unplug joystick.
I know it could bee difficult to reproduce the issues due to the infinite PC hardware configurations. Recording the whole issue on a video, demonstrating the issue is easy. The difficult part is uploading it to Youtube. I only have 768kbs upload capability, a decent quality 720p40 video would take day and night to upload.
I'm also on Discord.

Nooooooo!!!!! Well, thank you for trying. I was waiting for your resolution to help me decide if I was going to get the game or not. If it's causing that much trouble getting your controller to work, then I'll pass for the time being. I grow tired of games claiming "full controller support" when they have controller issues like that.
Sorry you went through all of that, but thank you for at least letting me know if it worked or not. :)
Reminds me in the late 1980's Ken McMahon from Commodore 64 User magazine reviewed some ninja game, and gave it 0/10 ! FES, yes you are close. If the gamee was made for 'hard core' fans who can get along without instructions and thee criticisms below, then it was never obious.
* Horrible controls, from late 1990's.
* No mouse support in the game. You can't even point and click to steer your character to a position.
* No native support for Xbox controller, controller icons are PS4 only.
* Launched the game, got greeted with Press Start. I pressed start on active powered Xbox controller, nothing. Then pressed every key on keyboard, NOTHING happened. Pulled up Task manager and killed task.
* Controls: Although my default controller in Windows was XBOX, it doesn;t seem to be recognised or supported. Steam Big Bicture was required enable PS4 controller 'help'. Restarted in Steam Big Picture, did PS4 controller seettings, launched the game and was then able to start 'Press any key'. Only to find that one can't interact using mouse. Avoid Fear Effect Seedna and buy Invisble Inc (also isometric) has mouse support, frequently on sale with Steeam Workshop support. * PS4 workaround found after trawling forums. This is a HUGE mistake/oveersight by developers.
* Not optimised ! 23 fps on Ryzen 1600X w/32Gb Ram, Radeon RX 480 + SSD's. For a game with static visuals this is terrible. Other games I own runs at least 30 fps in 'high' with the same rig.
* No tutorial or simple introduction mission. No obvious indication on what to do.
* Non exiting user interface. No on screen prompts for map or any other indication of controls.
* No icons on doors to indicate what to do. Within the first minute of the very first mission my character got in front of a (lockeed?) door, there was no icon to show 'press F to open door', forget about "You need XYZ to open the door". Nothing. I exited the game. Unlikely to return.
* Posted the error in Steeam forums, a forum mod responded but no response freom developer.
* Posted faults on Facebook page, got slapped as spam.
* Did the devs ever bother to look at steam hardware statistques/enquette ? No !
* Since release, no patches ! Not that I have noticed anyway.
Playtime, 01:37 seconds median (OUCH) !! Probab;y also people who couldn't get past title screen.

Looks like FES has less players than their was Kickstar backers ?
Metascore: 39%
Owners: 1,939 ± 1,697
Players total: 2,313 ± 2,615 (119.29%)
Followers: 2,496
Peak concurrent players yesterday: 3
YouTube stats: 253 views and 5 comments for videos uploaded last week, 0 new videos uploaded yesterday.
Playtime total: 01:08 (average) 01:37 (median)
PS: I've also tried Xbox controller emulator and had the same result, no Dpad in game or in menues.
The workaround suggested bty developer is to unplug my USB joystick, since none of the developers seem to own a joystick or XBOX controller. It's unlikely that there will be fixes forthcoming. I hope you requested a refund on Steam. Kickstarter backers got their game made. Kickstater backers most likely received a 'remaster' of the original. Updated gfx, and that is all. The game is so archaic the interface, the way players move, no hints on what to do.This kind of design wouldn't been distaster in the mid-1990's. Watch ACG's review, it's quite accurate, especially when he said: "I could take a bunch of turds and roll it into a flatbread and call it a burrito". Yes, that said it all.
