This was only added to the fact that garbage blocks puyo players playing (as it should) whilst comes from under tetris users which doesn't hinder them at all aside obviously when they pile out. Heck it was complained that sometimes it could help them get tetris(s) with ease.
The big reason puyo only and tetris only was added to 2 was to ease the balance so less puyo vs tetris happened as it was considered incompatible in balance... which it is.
Puyo players have to chain to win. The key to getting good attacks is to think and move quickly. There is very little room for error, but if you survive a 5-chain, you usually have some time to attack before the next 5-chain (and if you send enough trash, there will be no "next 5-chain"). Basically, think of this as an Ultra game mode: you have to send enough attacks in a certain time frame to prevent your opponent from getting big chains.
Also, don't do 4-wide or anything. As a Tetris player, weak but consistent attacks are better than strong stockpiles when it comes to Tetris vs PuyoPuyo.
I got frustrated when battling Schezo or the Dark Prince as Puyo players when I was playing Tetris since I was trying to combo it, but after I switched to Tetrises, it became a lot easier (not a guarantee win, but significantly higher win rate, from ~5% to about 80%). Usually, a single Tetris quickly followed by a double Tetris (comboed) is enough, but that depends on RNG and your opponent.
