When you opened a match, go to Customize > Stage and choose any background that you want before the start of a match. More backgrounds will unlock as you progress through adventure mode.
(Note: This doesn't apply to Swap matches and Challenge modes)

When I mean custom I mean homemade. I saw a few guys doing it on Twitch but I found nothing with Google :shocker: I'll ask 'em.

Ok so basically, to find the bg you'll need to go in your local files (duh). Go to data_steam > data > ingame_bg. Find the BG to edit. to open the file you will need a tool called TPPK tool. (There are several guides on it so I don't wanna go over it) Once you convert the files, you can open them in whatever drawing program you like and edit them. Finally, you will need to convert them back to NARCs using TPPK as well. From there, insert them back into the folder and your background should work. hope this helps! (Forgive me if i got something wrong im pretty novice at modding as well)

P.S. don't forget to make file back-ups!~

Nvm! Ignore the post above. I was experimenting at the time myself. doing this does not work (or at least that part is incomplete). I just finished trying and trying to load a battle with the bg selected would make it crash. I would point you in the direction of the puyo modding discord but I don't have a link right now. sorry for the inconvienience.

You just need to convert NARC to GIF, because they are animated backgrounds. Split GIFs into multiple JPEGs or PNGs and edit each frames, then merge them into GIFs again and convert them back to NARCs, this should be done without crash.
(Cause they were animations, detected still backgrounds may cause game crash)

I finally got around to trying to mod backgrounds again last night and I'm not sure how to convert the narc to a gif and it still open. I've tried converting it several times but then whenever I go to open it with my editing software it won't open

Then I recommend you to try Beneton Movie GIF, the best software to split GIFs into JPEGs and editing frames, also used to merge photos into GIFs.

Ok I got it working but this method is for streaming purpose only. Basically you replace one of the original BG with a green background (I found it on an Esports puyo puyo pack on google). Play with chroma key in your streaming app and it's done. Your viewers get to see the backgrounds of your choice, but you're playing with a green background on your side.
