Is it possible to beat a puyo player with tetris in VS?
I have played a few rounds of ranked, and my game of choice is tetris, but everyone else seems to be rocking puyo, and as far as i can tell its impossible to beat a puyo player with tetris, by the time i get a good brick up, the puyo player hits me with a big chain and BANG screen full of junk, and instant loss.

Has anyone had any luck beating a puyo player with tetris?

there is different ways to play to increase your bar , but i think you have to learn the spins first for every tetrimino ( except O of course )

could someone elaborate on the T-spin thingy? i keep getting my ass kicked in endurance by the AI
i'm not master on this game but what i learned for double t-spin which is easier one , you just have to make in 2 lines ( T ) shaped gap , and place tetrimino on third line to make one of its blocks hang over the ( T ) gap , and when the T tetrimino come in rotate it facing on left or right depends of the gap you made , when it reachs at the lines surface , quickly rotate the tetrimino on propper direction before its locking , AND REMEMBER DON'T USE HARD DROPS USE SOFT DROPS , it needs practice

SEGA had seasoned Puyo player S2PID make some tutorials on both Puyo and Tetris. Look here for basic T-Spins:

alright thanks, i'l practice it and take a look at the tutorial.

I'd have preferred a Tetris with Grandmaster Challenge rules. That game had the best version. Current TTC rules make the experience inferior, especially with the instant drop button. Even the classic 80s Tetris arcade game was better

tournament league are using swap mode , which i see it most fair methode to play against eachother for these puyo and tetris mixes , there are different tactics in this mode as delay the garbage blocks to survive , attack with inactive mode + the active one attack ( while tetris is active , your puyo can do chains in background andsend garbages )

Not even grand masters. Anyone who is remotely fast can smother Puyo before they get a chance to even do anything.

Do any Puyo veterans have any tips for new Puyo players?

At any rate, I love this game (finally, a quality Tetris game on Steam) and I'm so glad it made it to PC.

I grew up on Tetris, but later saw a puzzle game with a funny story mode on MAME called Puyo Puyo. It took me hours to beat arcade mode and frustration. I kept replaying it because of the story mode. Now it only takes about 15 minutes.

What I did to get better was study top Puyo players. Every piece they use is efficient & they're thinking several steps ahead. Watch a video, pause it at each piece. Predict where it will go. Most likely you will guess wrong. Wrong guess? Restart. Eventually you will memorize their pattern.

I highly suggest studying GTR videos (Great Tanaka Rensa). While it is not the easiest pattern to learn, it isn't a hard pattern too. Stairs pattern is easiest but it will limit your growth. GTR is versatile at high level of play.

I found that maybe 1 in 10 are Puyo players. Majority of players on rank now are Tetris player. The Puyo players online have been playing for a very long time. They play against other very strong Puyo opponents from Japan.

I play both Tetris & Puyo Puyo. I found getting to just intermediate level Puyo Puyo takes so much more time than learning Tetris. Not only do you need to learn patterns, you have watch your opponent's screen as you play and actually react split second to what your opponent does. Like a fighting game, it's reactive and proactive. Of course, you have to adapt as they change strategies too.Whereas in Tetris vs Tetris, most of the time you play it like a single player and go as fast as you can.

When playing as Puyo against Tetris, I feel Puyo players are not even playing how they normally would be playing (vs Puyo). A lot of strategy is loss like cutting your 8 chain short so you can kill opponent with 3 chain. Against Tetris, it's a bit weird building upward, but it's different and fun. Due to how fast Tetris attacks are, I have to limit the amount of openings I have at the cost of larger compact combos. A great Tetris players who can spot these Puyo openings will kill a Puyo player in a few seconds.

What works great against Puyo players as Tetris is:

1. Early attack at beginning of the round
2. T-Spin & Tetris in quick succession
3. Attacking during their opening. Ex opponent's trigger point only has 1 piece instead of 2,3 pieces.
4. Don't try to out combo them. At this level, Puyo players can perform 10+ chain combos in their sleep.
