For Tetris, the AI is comparatively mediocre, since the AI doesn't know how to do T-spins, but they are very good at Tetrises, downstacking, garbage management, and perfect clears, and also combos, so they can still provide a decent challenge, especially if you turn on core AI.
The most powerful AI Tetris players are Feli, Dark Prince, Ex, and Ecolo, although Rurue can give quite a decent whopping at times, just not as powerful as the first 4.
I think, if I had to rate the AI opponents, Dark Prince's Tetris, with core AI enabled is around a 7000-rated human's skill. So ya, they will provide you with enough practice until you are ready to face skilled human opponents. Core AI for Ecolo Puyo is about a 10000-13000 rated human player's skill, maybe more.
