SOULCALIBUR VI

So I decided to play Soul Calibur IV yesterday.
Just to make a comparison between this game and SCIV that people were talking about.

Honestly I don't know why people would want to go back to 4. Unless your main was Darth Vader or Yoda or something.

Characters felt fairly sluggish, Nightmare and Siegfried felt like clones of eachother back then, combo-wise, and the unlock mechanics for equipment/characters were a real chore.

Ivy feels way too convoluted than she currently is, which is a good thing now because I doubt I'd want to play her older incarnations.

Characters like Apprentice felt way too fast compared to other characters, so there was a very obvious balance issue back then.

The bonus Guest characters felt like they stood out like sore thumbs because they had anime faces compared to how realistic SC characters are supposed to be designed.

I think about the only thing I'd maybe want would be some of the exclusive equipment characters got, like Hilde and Setsuka's outfits, but if you compared their P2 outfits with the parts you get, the parts were more shoddily rendered.

Speaking of which WHY DID they only use P2 outfit parts for that game, anyway?

Outside that, Nightmare had three different design sets (and malfested arms to go with), so I'm not sure what they were going for in that game, creatively. Would be nice to see different Nightmare parts though, especially for female characters to use.

The Tag-switch mechanic felt under-developed as you could easily ring out/sweep people tagging in from a K.O. In fact wasn't there a Darth Vader joke video along those lines?

The Tower game mode puts you up against characters who can auto-parry everything and break all your throws, not to mention they damage you with every parry... talk about unfair. At least in Libra the parry mechanic isn't going to kill you outright.

Nope. I'm pretty happy with Soul Calibur VI... it's the best SC game I've played in a while... if they gave us parts from SCIV that'd be cool, but I like the fighting mechanics as they are right now... it feels exciting and fast to play.

It's just too bad Darth Vader couldn't join the roster, heh.

My thoughts exactly. People don't remember how horrid IV was gameplay wise. V was a slight step up in the gameplay department, but a HUGE step down in every other aspects (roster, game modes...)

It bears repeating: Soulcalibur 6 had neither the care, the budget, and the development it needed. It is barebones in some aspect, but the devs focused on what mattered: the core gameplay. And really, it's objectively the best it has ever been. It's not the Soulcalibur we deserve, but it's the one we need right now.

My only real gripe is that there's hardly any female armor parts this time around. Not to say I don't like making male characters, but in SCV at least you had an outfit with female malfested arm parts (Pyrrha Omega's outfit), and I've always wanted to make a female Nightmare style character.

I also want more Soul Edge and Soul Calibur weapons so that everyone can equip them, like SCII used to do.

Sieg and Nightmare had "Final Form" weapons that glowed real nice to boot. Those were cool.

So basically you like it cause its more simplified. Whats the point in playing a character with a versatile moveset such as ivy, but any random can spam long range grabs across the screen attacks? I like the speed of this game, but its too casual friendly with all these terrible mechanics that help people escape getting wrecked. I like my fighters to reward people are better.

^Guys like you need to think about the community rather than themselves. A skill wall might feel nice if you're really good at the game, but it STILL gets lonely at the top without one, let me assure you.

I wouldn't mind if they made Seong Mi-Na's move Lightning Fang, 1B, require FC like in 4. It's the one thing i find oppressive in SCVI so far, with it's homing missile tracking and almost unreactable speed.
Maybe it's easier to play against offline, but i don't know. Who plays offline save for esports players anyway? I think everything else is pretty good. Well, Tira and Taki are a pretty hard to play as against people that know their strings.
SCIV Zasalamel was a boss cahracter though, he had some oppresive combos back then.

Most characters with permanent Soul Charge are oppressive if you think about it though...

People wanna go back to 4? Wait what?! Guess people love Algol and Amy that much.

Hilde, Cassandra, Setsuka, Algol, Amy and Yun Seong. Yun Seong can be replaced by Hwang though. And Dampierrre should be forgotten. Also SC4 has a lot of interesting parts for character creation. I really miss them. And stages.
P.S. I would mention Lizardman too, but SCV Aeon is better.

Speaking of gameplay. What do you say, comparing gameplay and mechanics from SCV and SCVI?

Preat sure people hated IVs gamplay and horible netplay but loved its roster
And loved how V evolved the gamplay and good netcode but hated the fact most of the roster got replaced.
Personaly i think Namco shuld legit re relese V.
As much as some people dislike its diferent enough from VI that its basicly its own game and not jsut a less comlex iteration of VI.

I'd say SCV was good for the most part with exception to roster and content. Algol was improved in SCV from his SCIV incarnation as I recall. SCV really only lacks the Reversal Edge mechanic and the visual appeal SCVI does.

If they put him in SCVI, who knows how powerful he'd be!
As for Amy, she was basically a clone of Raphael mostly until she became Viola.

Hwang was... I dunno, he was too much of a Xianghua clone if ask me.

Setsuka/Alpha Patrokolos was meh, okay I guess.

Cassandra was basically Pat's and Pyrrha's aunt in SCV, so she was an old lady by then, methinks.

Did you by chance go online in 4? Because I do like Soul Calibur IV and have played it consistently since the beginning up until VI's release, and I can tell you definitively that that game's online has been dead for ages (360 version at least). I've watched it steadily decline over the years, and other than peak hours when there might be 12 people online, I don't even want to play anymore because matches are so few and far between and you fight the same people over and over again. Somehow I doubt there's been an explosion of activity since then.

Again, I liked IV, but not even I'm going to pretend like it was the high point of the series' popularity. Even when it was still relatively new, people were talking about going back to SCII and a few crazy misguided inviduals wanting to go back to SCIII. There are people who like it, such as myself, but we're distinctly in the minority on this one.

So, yeah, I call ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on people seriously wanting to go back to IV (... or III ... or V ... SC really hasn't hit a home run in forever.)

IMHO you can't really judge a game by netplay alone... also playing regulars is a good thing so long as you make an effort to improve that is.

Yeah, it's definitely my least favorite in the franchise. Not only because of the sluggish gameplay, but because there's a lack of game modes in comparison to SC3. I guess I'll say SC5 has this issue too, but at least it was fun to play for a while.

Only reason I'd ever go back to 4 is Amy. My sweet, sweet Amy.

I am effectively Raphiel IRL.
