But if you grade it as the newest installment of Soul Calibur with an already established fanbase expecting elements of the previous titles to make an appearance in the sequel it fails miserably.
If they were going to change the cast that dramatically they should have just started a new title and tried to build from there. That way the fanbase who were expecting Soul Calibur to be Soul Calibur would know that this new game was not going to be Soul Calibur and would be something else and they would not expect the game that isn't trying to be Soul Calibur to not be Soul Calibur.
What it was was the company trying to ensure a buyer base for their new game by reusing an already established title. The fans expected a continuation of the new game they loved with better graphics, maybe more game modes and a wider (not different) cast to choose from. Bandai is trying to appeal to a younger generation of gamers by spurning their loyal and established fan base.
There's such a thing as evolving your game with the times and then there's completely revamping it. Soul Calibur 5 was revamping the series. And then Soul Calibur 6 was selling out the fan base to make a quick buck. Soul Calibur 4 was the last respectable game in the series.
SC5 had the best online play, and the Colosseum was AMAZING for finding matches! We could taunt each other and talk trash. Weekly in-game online tournaments were hosted with prizes. I made a lot a good friends playing SC5 on PS3. The just-impact system added ACTUAL depth and required lightning fast reflexes, to the point were it's basically only possible on LAN or Local Co-op. The skill cap was huge with this one, and is beloved by those of us that travel/ed to East-coast tournaments, at our own expense, with the simple hope of laying down a beating on our long-distance SC Brothers. For these reasons, untalented plebs don't usually enjoy SC5, because it's simply too fast for the mind of a "Press X now" Witcher/AC/SC6 player. (JK ;-p but SC5 IS definitely much faster.)
SC6 online just sucks. I'd also argue that, in it's entirety, SC6 is easily the worst of the SC franchise, including Soul Blade. The single player campaign has longevity (if you enjoy it) and offers some practice, but the new Rock-Paper-Scissor animations really ruined SC6 from day one. The pacing of matches was totally ruined by this one simple GIMMICK. It looks stupid, it feels stupid. If the animations were instant, we wouldn't care as much. Sales (or lack of) clearly indicate the outright fan refusal of this new mechanic.
That's why SC2 currently has more active players.
To OP (years later lol?) and potential purchasers of SC6:
SC2 has the best balance, and is currently preferred by the online community. Check Discord for groups details.
I feel like most of you are still more concerned about the "story" than the actual gameplay. SC6 mechanics suck. It's a bad game. It just is. If it wasn't, there would be WAY more players than the paltry ~250 a day. It's a bad sign when you sell over 2.1 million copies, but only ~250 players decide that your game is good enough to keep playing....
SC7 does NOT seem likely and the game director KATSUHIRO HARADA tells us why.

SC2 was the best!
The online scene is pretty dead but playing against my cousins still scratched that itch. The story mode was fun. The voice acting wasn't cheesy or over the top like in Soul Calibur 6. The moves aren't over animated where the attacks are "hidden" by the whooshing colors of the attack. Making parries feels impactful, the combos feel smooth and I genuinely enjoyed the cut scenes in story mode. The only over the top voice was the narrator, but the narration lines are short maybe a couple sentences and that's it. Most of the story telling is animated rather than spoken. And some of the written dialogue is pretty good. Yoshimitsu in particular stands out as a well written character.
As far as balance goes, the Star Wars guest characters were the only ones who felt out of balance. Yoda being a hippity hoppity midget made throws near impossible to pull off and the Apprentice was just absurdly hard hitting. But the Soul Calibur characters themselves were all well balanced. Astaroth has reach and power but was slow. Talim was nimble, quick, unpredictable but lacked raw power. Voldo is still weird and super human and Mitsurgi is still the most versatile fighter. Everyone has their own style and some matchups are harder than others but never impossible.
You can also make custom characters where you can "unlock" wardrobe pieces as you progress in the game in various ways. You can even make custom outfits for existing characters. Your custom characters "borrow" the skill sets of existing characters but it's still neat that you can reskin characters personally and depending on the character dimensions you either get power and reach for being taller or a smaller hit box for being smaller. It was pretty basic but I still miss the ability to unlock armor and equipment but I know that will never return.
I just don't see how you make Soul Calibur 4 and then regress this far. Soul Calibur 4 had a soul, Soul Calibur 6 has near half of its roster locked behind a paywall. It's irrefutable how anyone can justify Soul Calibur 6 being an improvement over past games in the series.
I still get told "be happy that we got this game because it almost didn't happen!" So I guess I am in the minority with how much I hate Soul Calibur VI.
In a lot of ways I kind of wish it never came to market. Wondering what could have been is a preferable sentiment than witnessing the game get pimped out and ruined as a cash grab. It has the character names and likeness but nothing else. The online scene is dead, the single player was purposely underfunded... why was this game made?
There's a story mode? Also you sound like you'd complain about not having milk in your coffee in the morning so any thing you have to say is already invalid to me and like 90% of the planet. When you find some thing actually worth complaining about I would be shocked to find any one that's not a random stranger would even bat an eye because you feel like complaining about the same damn thing since 2018 only backed up by the fact that you haven't had an original thought since 2008 I can't help but pity every one that know's your full name. I'm in full disbelief that you don't know where these games are if you have played them growing up. Either you where drunk, 12 years old, or an attention craving toxic bag of divorce and/or separation who should seriously go join a discord group if your looking for conversation instead of spreading the toxic bile that is your every thought across the internet just because you think your balls are too big to google a question so you have to make your ignorance every one else's problem just because your life lacks conflict.
SCVI is the worst in the series. Online polls suggest that most fans agree with this statement. VI was the worst. There's even a series tier list website, for the uninitiated. You're the minority, Zanco. Don't be mad. Accept the fact that none of our opinions matter, and the devs will do what devs do, ignore their fan base.
SC2 and soul edge are the best
