DLC will always have a place, why?, because people will always want more. No game can come with everything, it is a question of whether the base game had the quality and enough content to justify the asking price. Now, there are right and wrong ways of applying DLC. It is just unfortunate that some companies nowadays try to keep nudging for that extra $.
It's as scam anyway you see it, and people buying this game is agreeing with these new terms for the franchise, which only damages Soul Calibur and harms players.
Bandai Namco won't stop making Soul Calibur, it's one of it's flagships. If it doesn't sell well we may have a real complete edition in matter of months, like what happened with Mortal Kombat XL.
Consumers have the last word, guys. Don't feed the greedy machine AAA games industry have become.
Also Tira is outside of budget a fan requested character so they actually have a good reason to make her a DLC.
Physical copies also have distribution and packaging costs.
CD Projekt Red I imagine get a small cut.
Bandai Namco gets bout 50% of what they put it, Unreal isn't that expensive to develop in and marketing is nowhere for this game. It's pretty clear that it's a "product" for the holiday season for the company that they have no real faith in making money.
The game is an incomplete product. I know people are used to this by now because game prices haven't gone up in a decade but cutting off 20% of the roster for Day 1 DLC is a joke when the roster is tiny. The pricing is still sixty bucks because they know that the white knights will buy it day one no matter what state the game is in.
It will be half price or better by the Steam summer sale.
Rosters in Soul Calibur since 2 always had around 23 to 25 characters, This one have only 20, but hey! look! The season pass includes three more characters plus Tira if you pre-order. Yeah... now we know where the missed characters went. You can't look me straight to the face and tell me this isn't chopped out content.
Distibution of physical copies back in the day was way more expensive than now that they have digital distribution. There are also big studies that make way more complex games and don´t recur to these obviously abusive business practices.
I agree with future expansions to keep the game fresh, but only when the initial product is complete to begin with to justify it's full price.
If there weren't a Season Pass + Tira from the begining and the game would have come with at least the same if not a little more content than previous entries (Except SCV, that thing came bare bones in game modes), I'd have no problem at all, but we consumers have used the companies to give less content for more money every time, so things will only get worse if people doesn't react to these practices.
I love Soul Calibur since the times of Soul Blade, but I'm not willing to keep encouraging these practices that only worsen beloved franchises, even if I miss a sequel to one of my favorite games of all time.
That's why it's so important to me that people wakes up to these practices, I don't want our dear hobby to go even further down the toilet. There's a better gamming world beyond these disgusting practices if we all say "no more" together.
I get it if you want to skip a game if you don't like where it's heading gameplay wise or know for sure it lacks content, but excessive if you would love to play the game but skip it because of couple missing fighters sold on later date. Season passes aren't going anywhere since they sell and you just miss a game that you would want to play. You can always get it later if you aren't sure will you be playing in the long term.
I preordered the deluxe edition for less than the price the regular edition is on Steam. That should solve the problem for anyone who complains, but I guess it's too much effort for some.
And you don't even know which characters you're going to get. That's the kind of consumer behaviour that let companies do whatever they want, we're going to buy it anyway.
In times when we still could unlock characters by playing the game, we didn't know how many characters there would be in total and who these secret characters were going to be either.
Dude, they didn't charge you extra for those characters. Man, there are so many flaws with your logic I really don't know where to start with.
I'm not really paying for the DLC chars here either since I got an offer for the deluxe edition that's less than the price of the regular edition on Steam.
