Was Hwang supposed to be the Ryu of this whole series?
In color 4 where you select him, he has an evil version of himself. Plus he has an alter ego of Assassin? This guy is just too awesome! ^^ What do you all think?

No, if he was then he would be included in the base game as a main character. That role mostly goes to Kilik. Also Hwang's alternate may just be an anti version like Yoshimiitsu has.

The series itself doesn't have a main protagonist really. At one point the developers said Xianghua was the main hero, though.
A lot of characters have "evil" versions of themselves. Sophie and Cassie for example.

I always saw Hwang as the Ken to Mitsurugi being the Ryu in Soul Blade. Both shared moves in Soul Blade, Soul Calibur and Soul Calibur 2. Also while Mitsurugi is not the hero he lives the fight and has a no frills play style. I would say that Mitsu is the "Shoto" of the series.

The main character of the Souls series is different for every number.

SB: Sophitia & Taki
SC: Kilik & Xianghua
SC2: Raphael
SC3&4: Siegfried
SC5: Patrokolos & Phyrra

And given that 6 is basically a reboot of the series... Or a completely alternate timeline, given what Zasalamel envisions and given Cassandra encounters her SC4 self, trapped in Astral Chaos and telling her of what happened during the events of Soul Calibur 5 and Sophitia's shard issue.

In look only. The character was originally created as a Mitsurugi replacement due to a Korea ban on samurais. Even his story back in SB/SCI seemed to somewhat reflect this afterthought status, being rather basic and bland. SCVI has finally redeemed him, his Chronicle is among the best and he's set to be an important piece of the story hereinafter.

Mitsurugi may be the closest to a Ryu in the series. He's arguably the poster boy of SC, and he's basically all about perfecting himself as a fighter, which appears to be a common theme in Japanese protagonists.

Mitsurugi is something like Ken.
I think Siegfried is Ryu. And Nightmare is Akuma or Evil Ryu.

He kinda looks like Ryu Hayabusa from DOA now...

Trust me... I wasn't exactly giddy to know that the the story mode focuses on both of them. It didn't help that Patrokolos was, in all honesty, a terrible protagonist.

As a Pyrrha main (because of a lack of Sophie and Cassie), I feel this on every level.

Hwang wasn't his own character in the original arcade release of Soul Edge until Ver.II, and yet every gaming mag and promo outlet in the west for Soul Edge/Blade always put Hwang at the spotlight despite his original replacement/hidden character status. There have been like two different GamePro issues that had Hwang at the front and that's saying something!

To me he'll always be the Ryu or righteous main character of the series even if he did start out as a mere skin swap. Exposure aside, his story always revolved around peaceful means of protecting the ones he loved, whereas Mitsurugi pretty much did not give a damn whether or not anybody in front of him lives or dies; he kinda had his own outlook on how someone can be royally ♥♥♥♥ out of luck.
